WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 2, 1850 LATEST FROM EUROPE The steamship Cambria arrived at Boston, at 10 o'clock. on the 10th of November, with dates from Liverpool to Oct. 27, London to Oct. 26th, Paris 25th, Berlin 21st, Vienna and Rome to the 20th. The Hibernia and Washington had both arrived on the 4th and 5th November. England. From the Tribune, we learn the loss of four Greenland whalers, the Superior, 400 tons burthen, belonging to Peterhead; the Lady Jane, 390 tons, of Newcastle; Prince of Wales, 380 tons, of Hull, and a large American ship. They were all crushed by icebergs, about the middle of June last. No lives were lost. Her Britannic Majesty Victoria, WM Buffering with the chicken pox at last accounts. Abbott Lawrence, Esq., Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary from tho United States, had an audienco of her Majesty at Windsor Castle, on Saturday, October 20, to deliver his credentials. DURIVAGE, Esq. — Dear Sir, — Perceiving that you occupy a chair in the editorial sanctum of the Alta California, — upon which, by the way, I must congratulate you — I have thought that a few remarks upon matters and things in this quarter might be acceptable ; and first of all, I must give you an account of a MOST SHOCKING AND DEPLORABLE affair, which has just occurred in the Mines, about fifty miles from Stockton. It appears that a number of Americans had, at the commencement of the rainy season, selected a certain place near the Calaveras River, where they erected log cabins, and made preparations to winter. This was a place in which "dry blowing" for gold was carried on, last summer, by Chilians or other foreigners.
