it§ K ít&v: The Bear Portion of New Orle* * Inundated. The Belmont and Sarpy crevas- es are having the effect expected and are flooding the rear portions of New -Orleans. The water is already over the road leading to Lake Pontchurtrain and the lake- aide summer resorts at West End and Spanish Fort, and the numer- ous truck laruis back of the city, and íb pressing against the back protection levee. The situation grows hourly more serious and threatens a repetition of the Hood of 1888, when u district contain- ing over 25,000 people was from 2 to 10 feet under water and the people had to be fed by the city. The trouble is from Lake Pont- chartrain just in the rear of New Orleans, which has risen five or six feet. The lake has an outlet into the Mississippi Sound and the gulf through the Kigolets Straits, but the outlet is not suffi- cient to carry off the water and the lake is steadily rising, invad- ing all the lowlands around it and threatening New Orleans from the rear.
