Thurber, Texas: Saturday, December 9, 1899. Whole No. 177. GENERAL FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC NEWS NOTES The President has appointed Daniel S. Kidder of Florida as Consul at Algiers, Africa. The Spanish war veterans evidently believe in following pre- cedents; they now have two organizations. In Kentucky it seems to have been a case of counting upon votes not being counted before they were thrown out. Vice President Mariscal of Mexico says the present silver production of that country is $60,000,000 annually, but that it will reach $100,000,000 soon. Aguinaldo no longer has an army, but has announced h...

TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. An Enjoyable Week, Theatrically Speaking. Hoyt's Farce Comedy company has delighted five audiences at the Opera House this week, and will delight two more, this afternoon and tonight, before closing its week's engagement. This afternoon that old-time favprite, East Lynn, will be put on for the ladies and children, and everybody can go for 10 cents admission—besides, each child gets a sack of candy, free. Tonight the company closes its engagement, presenting A Clean Sweep. The entire caste of this company is composed of good material, and each member seems to have been selected epecially for the parts assigned them. The company made friends with the Thurber people on the first night of its engagement here, and has grown more popular with each successive per- formance. The leading man, Mr. H. B. Koch, is a finished ac- tor, and though a young man, has a bright future. Mr. Taylor Carroll, to who is assigned the villain's part, is peculiarly suited for th...

The Chinese Minister's comment upon the story that a treaty had been or was to be negotiated between countries having in- terests in China, including the United States, without China's knowledge or concent, shows that he is nobody's fool. After expressing doubt of the story, he said: "It is as though a party of your neighbors met and agreed how they would occupy your house. TEXAS MINJNG AND TRADE JOURNAL. WASHINGTON LETTER. Washington, December 6, 1899. Special Correspondence to Journal. FEW of the.old stagers who attended the opening session of either the House or the Senate—there are many peo- ple in Washington who could not be paid to miss open- ing day of Congress—regretted that the President's message was not sent in, for it is a wearisom task at best to sit through the sing-song reading of a message by the reading clerks, which few ever perform to the extent of following intelligently all the way through. It is so much more convenient to read it at your ease in the newspapers. And the message read Tuesday in both the House and Senate was unusally long—more than 20,000 words— and, although it is a very important document, will contain little that has not been outlined through the President's speeches and the remarks of his advisers in and out of the Cabinet by the ever vigilant newspapers of the country. very liftle was done. 8 TEXAS MINING AND TRADE JOURNAL. FLASHES OF THOUGHT. by professor d. s. landis. THE SEARCH FOR JOY. I went to the plain and up to the hill, And sought of the vale and sought of the rill, And sought of the bee, and sought of the wren, And pleaded with the birds, and pleaded with men, But each in its way pointed onward and on, To hills all burnished with gold of the dawn. I went to the streams and on to the sea, And sought for the isles untrammel'd and free, And fain would I find where man had not been— No sorrows of life, no hatred and sin— But Death had been there and reap'd th' ripe grain And smote the sweet isles with blighting and pain. I waited till morn the ebb of the tide, Then sought of the sea the song of the Bride; The caverns were glad with anthems of praise, The billows were songs, the ripples were lays; But choirs of the winds in temples of dawn, But whispered and shouted, "Onward, and on!" I follow'd the sun to the brinks of the night, And followed the stars to dawning...
