r Opinions September 23 1988 Page 2 lA Lay down thy Bk afl Pat's Comer Welcome to another year at HSU. I trust the summer was relaxing and enjoyable and I am quite sure that all of you are eager to hit the books once again (anyone for a slight case of burnout). A sincere welcome extends from this editor to each of the new students on campus; I congratulate you for your choice to continue your education. HSU has a wealth of opportunities available to those who are willing to take advantage of them. I suggest that you seek out and utilize the many services because they certainly will not be forc- ed upon you. Remember what you put in is what you will get out and if the day comes when you feel that your experience at HSU has been anemic keep in mind that you have nobody to blame but yourself. I had originally intended to devote this first editorial to a plea for staff members; however God has richly blessed me with a fabulous staff worthy of praise and ad- miration. Subsequently I deci...

Features September 23 1988 Page 3 Knight Some people are just not content to let history stay in content to let history stay in the classroom; they have to go out and dig some more of It up. Dr. George Knight Cook-Derrick Professor of New Testament and Greek at Hardin-Simmons University certainly falls into that category. Knight does not believe in studying history solely from a text. "There is a great deal more in seeing the artifacts and standing in the places walking on the street holding in your hand the actual ar- tifacts of the period. It's one thing to read about what hap- pened in those places; it's something else to stand there in that very place and visualize it. "History is not just a series of dates and names. In fact it is a record of people's lives. And when you do ar- chaeology you move beyond just a description to dealing with the actual hard data of history." He does admit to some per- sonal gains however. "Of course archaeology is ex- citing because you're the one ...

HARDIN-SIMMONS BRAND October 12 1988 Page 4 Features Real story gives film merit by Steven Isaac Judging by the amount of people at the Paramount Theatre this past weekend there was probably a fair por- tion of Hardin-Simmons students there to see The Great Escape. This incredible movie about the escape attempts of Allied prisoners of war from German POW camps during World War Two is a tribute to what can be accomplished when Hollywood treats historical matter with a little respect. The film is based on the tBHfefllijH(4&9lB Bartlett (Richard Attenborough) examines forgeries by Blythe (Donald Pleasence) in The Great Escape true account by Paul Brickhill of the mass escape from Stalag Luft III deep in the heart of German Silesia. The movie opens with a statement that although the story has been compressed somewhat the events are fac- tually based. That is in no small part a factor in the movie's impact. As George Harsh one of the real life leaders of the POWs said in the novel's ...

Though the Cowgirls did not suffer any broken bones or ejections as did other HSU teams they also only won one match. The Cowgirls started their tournament play against The University of Tulsa beating them three games to two. The Cowgirls then turned around and immediately played The University of Texas-El Paso losing a 1-3 match decision. Finally HSU ended their tournament play by losing to Sam Houston State in the semi-final round by the score of 1-3. Head coach Binny Canales was not pleased with having to play so many matches in such a short amount of time. He contends the girls were worn down by having to play back-to-back matches. Canales also stated though the competition was a bit tougher than they had seen in the past it was sti...

HARDIN-SIMMONS BRAND November 22 1988 Page 3 Features Hispanics still face obstacles but with improved odds by Steven Isaac The concern about how Hispanics are performing In the classroom is big enough that few people are unaware of the problem. The growing number of reports both in the visual and printed media leave little doubt as to the severity of the situation.
