FOOTBALL. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

FOOTBALL         A Melbourne writer is responsible   for the following interesting, if some - what alarming, paragraph :—" The sec- retaries of both league and association football clubs are indulging in a gen- eral wail about the rapacity, and the greed of the newly-fledged professional   footballer in Melbourne. He has tasted     blood, and is evidently hungry for   more. I have before me the South Melbourne Football Club 's balance- sheet showing the receipt last year to   be £2,977/16/3, and the expenditure   £236 less. It is currently reported that one prominent player in an association club has been offered £? per week to desert his team for a League Club, but   it is very questionable whether he will obtain a permit. The complaint of the secretaries aforesaid is general, but the remedy is not far to seek,   &a...

BOXING [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

BOXING. The Gunboat Smith who so speedily outed Bombardier Wells the other day is identical with the sailor man who strolled into Johnson's camp what time the big negro was training for   his fight with Jim Jeffries. Smith "put them on" with Johnson and is credited with having bowled big Jack over during the mill.

SPORTING. THE TURF. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

SPORTING.   THE TURF.   After April 5 there will be no racing in the metropolitan area until May 24. The interval will be taken up by the goldfields clubs.         It has recently become almost a matter of habit for the Victorian       jockey, W. Evans, to ride several win- ners a day in India. Another cable message was recently received (says Melbourne"Herald " ) stating that           Evans had again steered five winners in an afternoon.       Some sensational betting was in- dulged in during the currency of the   V.R.C. autumn meeting by a well- known Melbourne citizen (says "Sport ing Judge"). That gentleman is re-   ported to have landed something like £5,000 over the win of Eubulus on. Newmarket day, taking £2,000 to £1,000 in one bet...

CRICKET. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

CRICKET.       Frank Laver, in his book, "An Aus-     tralian on Tour," says: — "Speaking generally, the stand accommodation on the various grounds is good, but there is nothing in England to compare, with   Sydney or Melbourne in that respect. The dressing-rooms, as a rule, are small, and contain insufficient pegs   for hanging up clothes. In some in- stances they were not nearly secluded   enough from the public gaze; and   ladies seated in the reserve were every   now and again able to see us putting   on our flannels. This was, however, quite interesting to a number of them if we may judge by the close attention   with which they watched us. Shower     baths, an Australian delight—were   quite conspicuous by their absence on   a number of grounds."   &nb...

"DICK THE OUTLAW." [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

"DICK THE OUTLAW."   Ernest Albert Quill, 17 years of age,   was on Friday last sentenced to seven years' penal servitude by the Chief Justice of New South Wales (Sir Wil- liam Cullen) for having caused the death of an old man, whom he had   struck down when he was caught try-     3ing to take wares from the front of     the old man's shop. A long list of pre-     vious convictions was read out, and it     was stated that Quill was known as     "Dick, the Outlaw," and a member of     a dangerous gang, who frequented Red-     fern (Sydney). New South Wales'   Chief Justice evidently does not appre-   ciate the Biblical quotation, "An eye   for an eye, or a tooth for a tooth."   Seven years of gaol training, added to...

OLD CYCLISTS. WHERE THEY ARE NOW. HOW ENTHUSIASTS DROP OUT OF A SPORT. [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

OLD CYCLISTS                                 WHERE THEY ARE NOW.   HOW ENTHUSIASTS DROP OUT OF A SPORT.           The writer, in going through some old records of cycling, a day or two ago, came across a programme of the Zimmerman carnival held on the grass   track at the Cricket Ground on Nov. 16 and 23, 1895. Eighteen years ago! It seems but a   few years since "Zimmy" put in that   paralysing sprint to win by 50yds. the half-mile championship from Jack Par- sons and the cream of Australia's riders. It was a vice-regal programme, too, bound in morocco. There were only a dozen of them printed for the occasion. They do not have vice-regal programmes now. In those ...

The Coolgardie Miner Published Weekly SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1913 [Newspaper Article] — Coolgardie Miner — 5 April 1913

The Coolgardie Miner Published Weekly SATURDAY, APRIL 5, 1913 The question was asked the other day, " Why doesn't the 'Coolgardie Miner' offer a prize for a set of the best suggestions for stimulating the mining industry?" We may do that, later on, and also offer another prize for the best summary of what has been done within the past twelve months to encourage prospecting and develop-   ment. Anyone must admit that some-   thing should be done to create a min- ing revival, but very few agree, in de- tail, as to what steps should be taken. At the same time, the growing voting   power of the agricultural districts has become so attractive to those who have control of the public purse that there is an increasing difficulty attached to obtaining anything for the fields.   Even the State railways, as was the case under previous administrations, are utilised to coddle the farmer at the expense of the miners, and while the farmers' produ...
