PUBLIC MEETING IN DALY'S HALL. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 November 1898

PIJBLIC MEETING IN DALY'S HALL, Pursuant to the action taken by Cr. Matthews at last meeting of the shire council, in moving that a public cuw.-ting he held for the purpose of taforting residentts an opportunity of ventilating their grievances in connec tion with the harsh and tyrannical railway system to this place from Melbourne, was held in Daly's Hall on Monday evening. The attendance was most meagre, however, and a very conspicuous fact was was the absence of several persons whom, it should be thought, would assuredly have been present, but as in almost every local movement, the bulk of the work de volves upon a few, but if anything profitable results therefrom, how soon does the second party step in for a dip. It is a very poor acknowledgment to any public man to know that his efforts fail to find a re-echoing response in the nuinds of those whom he is trying to set ve, and it was disappointing in the extreme to observe the absolute indif ference which was shown towards the ma...

Cycling Notes. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 November 1898

Cycling Notes. Now that the racing season is about to open, it i.Jitting to review the status of Australian Sports as compared with European. A complaint has lately been forced in England that there is not an English sprinter who can he sent abroad with any hopes of succeeding at a large continental meeting where he is asking to meet the best riders of France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Italy. It strikes Australians as some what ludicrous that our old friend Barden should he still sent to uphold English pretensions to pre-emnience when such occasions occur. We can better understand the choice of Jack Green, whose robust exposition of the game we have so often admired; but we are well aware that there are several Australian riders who could beat Green homeovera mile. If he should turn up for the Austral Wheel Race, he will be accorded as hearty a welcome as anyone. So far as we can judge from the reports in the papers of the English racing season now closing, there does not seem to b...

GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 November 1898

GENERAL NEWS. - o: At a late hour last night., we were unavoidably delayed through the re port of the Yarra Glen sports, which was up in type, being smashed. Tt was.one of those misfortunes which happens at 6ne time or another, and it has thus prevented us from publish ing the report of the gathering in this issue, and has delayed the publication. A team of Port Melbourne bowlers visited Healesville on Wednesday last, and engaged the home club on the local rinks. Previous to the game being started, the visitors were driven around and a visit was paid to the Maroondah weir, where there is now some very nice scenery, and the outing was much enjoyed. The Guardian. PUBLISHED SATURDAY MORNINGS. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1898. SOMETHING FRESH. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 12 November 1898

PUBLISHED SATURDAY MORNINGS. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1898. SOMETHING FRESH. THE meeting which was called for Monday evening in Daly's Hall was not attended by as-influential a gather ing as could have been, wished, but still there was a matter touched upon which must sooner or later impress us with its importance, that is, if resi- ft dents wish to see the district make an st onward step in a progressive direction. d MIr. Cornish introduced into the busi- b ness of the evening a question which, ft perhaps, though irregular so far as that which immediately concerned the meet ing, calls for a word or two from us, s as it possesses for itself, if acted upon, a the consummation of a project which has for its recommendation that of a glorious trio-feasibility of object, d possibility of character, and proba- 2 bility of construction. Itissometimes well to paint a picture with gaudy c colors, hut it is not our desire to clothe t the mooted object with a garment of success at this early per...

OPENING OF A NEW CHURCH. [Newspaper Article] — Healesville Guardian and Yarra Glen Guardian — 19 November 1898

OPENING OF A NEW CHUIRCII. A very interesting service was held at Launching Place on Wednesday last,.the occasion being the opening of the new Church of England. A large congregation filled the building, the clergy present Leing the Ven. Arch deacon Langley, Rev. R. G. Burke, of tilydale, Rev. E. S. Chase, of Healeseille, and M1r. Shaw, Stipendiary Reader, of Warburron. The Arch deacon congratulated the congregation on the succesful reolt of their labori, which had resulted in the building of the chtrei, which. he then declared to fbeset apart for the service-of God. A new church was an outpost of the militant Church. He very forcibly urged their attendance an a duty as in cumbent on them being men, and therefore reasonable heings who needed to worship God, as it was upon the Minister appointed to the charge of that district. At the conclusion of the opening service, the musical parts of which were heartily entered into by the congregation, the Rev. B. C Burke administered the Sacra...
