Solomon Herman, for whose arrest a warrant was issued on a charge of eni bezaling, was apprehended at Ballarat to-day. He has since made two attempts at self-destruction, one by shooting and the other by taking pojson. It has been ascertained since the warrant was applied for,, that the, total defalcations amount to nearly £5000, It is under stood that Herman has lost very heavily through speculations ia mining shares. The, ibody or- the woman who was knocked down and killed by a hausom cab toa: Friday night, and about whose identification some doubt has arisen, has now been positively recognised as Annie Silk. MANAGER'S EEPOETS. Devouport S.M. Co. — I have to report for the week that I have boon over the section, and put in the lease pegs, also I completed forty chaius of a pack track, I which was finished on Wednesday. Now the I packers cau deliver the goods at ourcainp. I Have also completed two chains of trench ing iu deep ground, but rinding the country too deep for trenching, have considered it best to put in a small drive, as it is good picking ground, and will be cheaper working than cutting through the surface roots. I have about half the approach cut for starting in diorite country, which am of opinion overrides the mineral formation, this, we will prove by putting in the drive I above mentioned. I Bonanza S.M. Co. — During the week I have extended tunnel a further distance of I 30 feet, making a total distance of 120 feet. MINING IN NEW SOUTH WALES. . We Vegret to learn that the silver mines in the Tuena district of New South Wales are again on the wane, and that several of them have ceased working. The ore gives what oue would conclude was a remutfer ative result from assay, but the refractory nature of some of it causes a lot of mineral to escape. The Mount Costigan, Cordil lera, and Peelwood companies have got the finest plants in the district, and about £40,000 has been expended by the three companies named ia machinery alone. The cessation 'of operations, although only in a partial manner, has thrown about 300 men out of employment.
