Anglican Church Affairs. TO THE EDITOR OF THE SHOALHAVEN NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 April 1891

Anglican Church Affairs. TO THE EDITOfi OF CHB BBOA.LHATEK NEWS. Sir, — In your report of the Nowra vestry meeting be)d on Tuesday last I observe that Mr. P. H. Morton stated that the offer tories at Nowra for tho paat year amounted to £112 odd, ' being the largest known in the history of the Church in this district.' By referring to tho Easter sheet for the yoar ending 1889, Mr. Morton will find the Nowra offertories for that year amount ed to £118 5s 9d. Another subject to which I would refer was a remark by. the same gentleman where he neonis to me to ask, in effect, why if there was anything against Mr. Best the matter was not submitted to the panel of Triers? The reason was simply that the aggrioved parties considered it more con sistent with Christianity to withdraw quietly from a Church, where they could no longer worship in peace, to causing a disturbance in the Church. — Fours, re spoctfully, TRUTH. Nowra, April 8. Presbytekian.— At a meeting of the congregation of the Shoa...

New South, Wales Parliament. TO MEET IN MAY. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 April 1891

ITew South Wales Parliament. TO MEET IN MAY. When, a week ago, Parliament was further prorogued until the 28th in stant, it was thought the members of the Legislature would be called to gether very early in May ; but subsequent events lead to the conclusion that it will be nearer the end of that month before the business of the country is again taken in hand. The members of tho Ministry are maintaining Btriot silence as to what the programme for the session will be, and much speculation has, conse quently, been indulged in in political circles. Despite this fact, however, tho political bill of fare is not an absolute secret ; and events will doubtless cause considerable surprise in the public mind. Contrary to all expectation, no effort will be made to take a vote of Parliament on the federation question during the session. Sir Henry Parkes and the members of the Cabinet have decided this matter is one for - the people to speak upon through the ballot box, and with that idea in mind...

The Higher Life. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 April 1891

The Higher Life. As a writer on social topics, in a stylo that is elevating in thought, as well as elegant in diction, Mrs.' Lynn Lynton has Achieved a decided reputation. In her article on the Religion of Self Respect in tho ' New Review,' she makes a bold but justifiable attack on the money grabb ing tendency of the times. Slio seeks to awake to new consciousness the moral sense of the apparent worthlessncss of mere gold-worship. ' After all,' she says ' money iB not tho end of life, for when death comes pur money .is of no avail. This rather is the true end of life ; to try to lead a life of happiness, 'not a pleasure ; tb do right because it is right, to do. right even though itiuuyappoar to other people wrong, oven though it may bo contrary to all accepted maxims of our commercial world. Do right regardless of what people say, and, if necessary, defy, society. We, of. to-day, boast of our liberty, but wears the most miserable slaves the world has even seen. In every little deta...

The Old Man who Smiled. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 April 1891

The Old Man who Smiled. [Br B.W.H.] One time there was a good old man living in Kiama, not far from the present railway terminus. His back was bent, his step was slow, and men who gazed upon his snowy locks and face whispered to each other : 11 Ho is a good old man who has not long to live.' The old man had been well off in his day, but when he found himself on the shady side of life — wife dead and home broken up — he said to his only son : ' Here, William, take all I have and lot your home be my home till I die.' The* son took the papers — you befc he did — and the father was given a cosy corner, a big chair, and a corn cob pipe. All went well for a year or so, and then the son and son's wife began to make it uncomfortable for the nice old man in the corner. They threw out hints, deprived him of his comforts, and one cold day in winter he was told that he had better go to — Wattatnolla or Jembaicumbeue. Tho old man's heart was sore as ho went out into the world to battle against h...

Wholesale Suicide. [Newspaper Article] — The Shoalhaven News and South Coast Districts Advertiser — 11 April 1891

Wholesale Suicide. The present generation of mankind seems determined te proceed along the path that leads to death — tho one that will kill it quickest. The struggle for existence, business worry, gambling, horse racing and all nervous excitements, tend to reduco the vital strength and insure early death. Now-a-days it is . the pace that kills; the body ia worn out before its natural spell of life is spent. There jb no reason why all men and women — physically perfect — should not live tu be centenarians, provided care was takon that the system was not overtaxed in any particular direction. The symptoms of failing vitality are almost ton well known to need enumeration here ; first the appetite fails, with pain after eating, nervousness ensues, and sleepless or rest less nights with headaches and tired aching limbs on arising in the morning ; a confirmed languor or lassitude takes possession of the sufferer, who loses all interest in pleasure nnd even in life itself. Unfortunately s...

A married woman near to con finement has been drawn or cajoled into the Armv. and lias reeularly attended Us meetings when her health demanded that she ought to have been resting' at home. . . . . A few nights ago whilst the officers, and 'the pullet.' and a 'few more were in a paddock cackling away, some body threw a potato which struck the woman referred to in the lower part of her chest. She did not complain ot being Be'riously injured, but she received a shock which a women in her condition ought not to have been placed or led into the way of receiving.
