THE ADVANCE OF AGRICULTURE. [Newspaper Article] — Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser — 11 March 1898

T,HE ADVANCE OF AGRICUL TURE. .' At the Hawkoslitiry Agricultural Col lege some few days ago tho Minister for Agriculture stated that he thought the public s'cliool curriculum should bo so altered that a course of elementary agriculture should be included. This .statement tends to prove that the culti vation of the soil has claimcd much attention of late years from all thinking minds. Comparing the present position of tho industry with ten years ago ,tho change is almost incredible. New methods have taken the place of the old ideas; the most perfect machinery :is. now used, which does in a day what could not formerly be done in a week, and the more advanced farmers are now .enabled to make a good liying on an area that once would only -support a few stock. In support of this we might i just, refer to the land between our own town nnd the Murray. It is well within the memory of many of us that these lands were. once looked upon as next to worthless, even for grazing purposes, but the...

DISTRICT NEWS. [From Our Own Correspondents.] , *, - t .Thursday. We were favored last night -with an exhi- i bition of the cinematographe, in the School of Arts. . Despite, the dull times there was a full bouse. . . To-day the T. F. O'Sullivan against W. Roberts; case, -for maliciously wounding, commenced, and is now proceeding. As the case is sub judice, I will make no comment further than saying that it had its humorous sides. One of the witnesses stated that on the morning of the affray lie might have had some drinks — he, might have had 30 or 40— and with a sigh for the days that are gone, said -at one time he could do 80 in a day, but he could not do it now. Tho P.M. seamed astonished. How. is 80 for a record.
