8OUNO ADVICE. IMPROVING BEACHES. The following, which appeared in 'Newcastle Herald,' Is applicable l» local Councils: — The beaches need ti be improved in a carefully thought-cut plan. The Mayor expressed the view that the Council does not derive any remuneration from the beaches. The same argument might be appued to road repairs and other work. But as -i matter of fact the town does deriv; practical benefit from the beaches. T*;* expenditure in the city by thousand* of visitors should not be overlooked. The Council also derives no direct remuneration from the excellent work performed by the city gardener and his assistants. Yet they are rnakla? the place a pleasant place to !r»e in. and converting open spaces into plea sure resorts. lo course of time, if this good work i* proceeded with, sa- the steam-driven trams, with their un pleasant smoke, are replaced by elec - trie cars, the stigma, that Newcasti is a dirty city should be removed. LONDON EXTRAVAGANCE. DINNER AND SUPPER DANCE CRAZE. [Newspaper Article] — Nambour Chronicle and North Coast Advertiser — 12 January 1923

LONDON EXTRA VAGAHCE. DDCnER AND 5DPPER. DANCE CHAZE (By A 'Dancer' in Reynold's News paper.) One after another the great luxury hotels of London have been celebrat ing the opening of their dance season. Nothing seems easier than the way in which the big hotels extract bus dies of Treasury notes from their pa trons for an evening's amusement. These are 'dance dinners' and 'danc suppers' for which, the charge ranges from 8/6 to £1/10/ per head. This charge however, represents only the beginning or the patron's expenditure. Both dinner and supper include the dance, and on the face of it the dinner dance would appear to te the best ?value tor the money, because the whole evening of dancing can be dn joyed. But is it not necessarily so. To' begin with, people are always apt to 'do themselves' better at din ner than at supper. There will be coefc-tails at balf-a-crown a head bp fore the meat, and coffee, liqueurs, and cigars after it. These are all extras. Champagne will be drunk during ...

LIFE IN GERMANY. BRITISH OCCUPATION WELCOME. -L\RIST PRIEST'S IMPRESSIONS. Father J. B..Rausch, S.M., a Marist missionary priest, wbo has spent 20 years in the Solomon Islands, in New Zealand and latterly as superior of the Blessed Chapel Seminary, Mittagong, has arrived in Sydney after visiting Luxemburg, his native land, and other parts of Europe. Father Rausch spent a month in Germany. In the course of an inter view recently he said that meat was sr. dear tbaat most Germans could not afford to buy it. The same applied to butter, the result being thaat the phy sique of the people was beginning to be impaired. The ordinary worker could not afford to buy either of these necessities. Coal vjas lalso exceed ingly scarce, and the want of it was being severely felt by the German peo ple. What most impressed Father Rausca was the alarming stat* of the children in Germany. They appeared to be ill nourished and generally in a bad plight Many people were becoming victims of consumption from...

Correspondence. V/HAT ABOUT THE SUGAR COMMISSION? To the Editor. 'Xambour Chronicle.' =ir. Now that the report of the Commis sion is available, many readers will de siro lo know the position as to a new sugar mill. May I point out for gen eral information that the original pro position was to establish a second sug ar mill in the district either on coop erative lines assisted by the gov ernment, or on co-operative lines supported by English capital, was i'ormulaltd before anything was known of the Sugar Commission, and as far ns English capital ,is con cerned il depended on two things, viz: the production of the sugar cane nec essary to the profitable working of such mill, and the renewal of the Su i;;ir Agreement in even a modified form liy tin; Government of the Common wealth. The first of these is assured; the second will soon be decided, and if: the report of the Commission has done some little to establish the fact of tin; desire of the fanners and others of this district for i...
