POSSIBILITIES OF THE LACKLAN VALLEY. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 5 March 1898

POSSIBILITIES OF THE LAOH LAN VALLEY. Wo hear it great deal said about the ad versa nature of the climate of this ' region, and tlie impossibility of tjuceess 1 *11 agricultural enterprise under such climatic conditions. At tho snrae time I the evils of much worse and drier I climates in other parts of the world are overcome by artificial means ; and boih agriculture and horticulture thrives in California and Peru, in which countries much less rain falls' than in t-l-e \Lachlan Valley. In California, «xcept in tho months of December and -faniUiry, 110 rain falls throughout tho ye;uy\vhile. in Peru no rain falls from oue yfcar's end to another. It follows then that artificial watering under such 1 conditions must be rosorted to, and | this is done on a most extensive scale. I The state of California ia settled by over four millions of white people, all j depending more or les3 directly upon ihe products of the soil for business and tho means of living. Yet the population, of the stat...

LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS. [Newspaper Article] — The Hillston Spectator and Lachlan River Advertiser — 5 March 1898

LOCAL AND GENERAL NEWS.     ONCE more has the hand of dealh invaded the community of Hillston, having claimed   from our midst two victims within a short   space. On Friday of last week the infant and only child of Mr. and Mrs. E. Burgeses succumbed to a lingering illness: and on   Tuesday evening last at about 4 pm. Mrs Bevan, wife of Mr. Mathew Bevan, of Wangaroon station, also died. The de-   ceased lady had suffered for a long time from an internal complaint, which dur- ing the last two months was accentuated by other complications, and some six weeks ago she was brought into Hillston for medical treatment. She stayed at the residence of   Mr. A Alchin, who is, we believe, a son-in-   law of the deceased. The late Mrs. Bevan was one of the oldest residents of the Lach-   lan district, having resided here about 30 years, aud both she and her husband were very widel...
