INSECT CRIMINALS. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 30 November 1911

INSECT CRIMINALS. The loss to mankind caused by tiny insects is frightful to contem plate. Insects have injured man and his prosperity to an extent which in some cases have affected the prosper ity of whole nations. The other year the growers of champagno wines in France were faced with a loss of two million pounds. largely due to the depreda tions of a little harmless-looking in sect which measures but tile fraction of an inch. The destruction cau?sed by this tiny creature-tho Phylloxera --is almost beyond credence, though tile monetary loss caused by its rav ages runs into hundreds of millions of pounds and fur exceeds that caus ed by some of the greatest wars of modern tinmes. As vine growers suffered in France, so did olive growers In Italy. In fact, that country has suffered a ,loss of C£3,000,000 in a single year, owing to the ravages in tie olive orchards of one tiny insect-the oil fly. Moths of various kinds have cost the world fabulous amounts; In fact, it has been stated t...

THE HOLY LAND. A HICHEN IMPRESSION. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 30 November 1911

TH HOLY LAND. A IIICHEN IMPRESSION. In his new book, " The Holy Land" Mr. Ilobert Hichens contrasts the rich and silken beauty of Damascus with the ascetic austerity of the sur roundings of Jerusalem, where more over he found in latter April cold and gloomy weather. No mystery of orange and indigo, of glimmering tur quoise and cinnamon there. IIe is eloquent, however, in describing the peculiarly passionate apprehension which the spell of the Orient, as such lays upon the heart of the traveller in Palestine. We might wish per hops that the spell of the East were disconnected from the spelling of the transatlantic West, but in the charm of Mr. Ifichens' description we for get the worshippers in " woollen leg gins at the IHoly Sepulchdr," and loei ourselves riding with him among tile oleander and mrytle, the terebinth and cypress and olive and pomegran ate, among the bullffaloes reposing in the marshes, the fellahin at the plough, the gipsy and the Bledouin in that land which once was...

THE FRIGHT OF HER LIFE. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 30 November 1911

THE FRIGHT OF HER LIFE. -- - At the ,time of the Whitcehapet murders I was living in leanchester, and many will remember the murder cr publishing his intention of going to Manchester and repeating his crimes there. My hluband had been away travelling for some weeks, and I was left with my three little ones for company. The evening papers bad reported an attempted attack on a woman living in one of the sub Irbs of Manchester. After putting my children to bed, I sat alone with my nerves, on edge, and so; when 1· vent stalirs, saw a man jlirkng iii, every corner. I could not sleep, and lay.awake for a long time, when suddenly I felt the bed lift right up (it was a very low one) as though someone was un erneath was getting out.l None can know the terror I felt. I stood up on the bed and jumped out as far as I could, struck a light, looked under the bed and round the room, no one to be seen. The intruder had gone to my children, was my next thought, and I ran with a candle in my.hand to ...

THE ROMANCE OF THE THIMBLE [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 30 November 1911

THE ROMANCE OF THE THIMBLE -4-- The history of the thimble extends back into the mists'of antiquity, and when and whore the article originated history sayeth not. One of the earliest mentions of it, however, appears In an old book of St. Hildegard, of the twelfth century where, among nine hundred articles of daily use, mention is made of a "linger-huth," the old German ver sion of the modern Teutonic name of "finger-hut"-that is, a hat for the finger. The Museum in Darmstadt possesses a short bronze thimble, dating from the fourteenth century, whilst in Nuremberg, in 15314, the " Thimble makers" formed a guild of their own. A very handsome thimble is preserved in a German museum, which in shape resembles a modern thimble, but under .tid holes is orna mented with pictures, shields, eagles, and an inscription. Later on, thim bles were decorated with jewels, and worn as such, and were arranged to hold small pictures, like the lock eta of the present day. There is, of course, the pretty...

OUR HOLIDAY TRIP TO FIJI. [Newspaper Article] — Werribee Shire Banner — 30 November 1911

Duf HOLIDAY TRIP TO FIJI. ---------- BY ELSIE REID. "Some take no heed of any future day, But kiss Time's hand, while .wer ing yet his bonds. Dreaming their young, warm-blooded life away, Amid Life's lotus-ponds." Will Ogolvio. At eight p.m., our ship steamed out of Sydney Harbour, en route for Fiji. i? heavy fog had wrapped itself rounL everything, giving a solemnity to that usually gay city. The tog did not succeed, however, in subduing the cheerful little ferry boats. These ab solutoly refuse to be dull under any circumstances, and contribute much to maike Sydney the fairy-land it is. Gayly in and out they glide getting hopelessly in the way of more digni fied craft, and being reprimanded in fifty "ifilerent sharps and flats, by the sirenu. The bugler played his farewell dirge to the various girls he hand left be hind him, to the tune of "Auld Lang Sync," "Say Au Revotr. but not Good-bye," and every other ditty which entered his head. After two days' steamine we enter ed - our fi...
