A GERMAN LETTER. Kaiser Bill and His Politicians. Berlin, December. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

A GERMAN LETTER. I Kaiser Bill and His Politicians. Berlin, December. The week here has be-*n the mo't instructive. as showing how little rel'once is to be placed on our friends of the burireoise. Hince voting against the Penal -ervitude Bi I, the (reman Liberal*, Radi cal and Clericals have lost no time in the attempt to prova to the Govemmsnt that they are 'good does ' all the same, and that they have nothing in common with thoae - Social Democrat*. Every proposal wh'cb our comrades brought forward to ame'iorate in any way the condition of ihe worker baa been treated with the aame contempt. Most instructive of all, however, wag the attitude of the Fieisinnige Volkspartei, ie, the extreme Radical Lef', toward* the p-oposals which, as 1 mentioned last week, were introduced by our comrades, to abolish all restric tions on the right of combination. They voted against these proposal on the ground that they would h«ve no chance of being accepted by the Bundearath, in other words, the Ge...

IMPERIALISM. A Socialist View. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

IMPERIALISM. a Socialist View. (livS. i;. Hf -i:s'»*. ) Fok i time it :tlmost seuined thut it | would be necessary for lis to ustalJish ! the apparently obvious pruiii.sitioii that the Socialist movement is vitally concerned with events in South Atric-t In some quarters 1 havu heard it as serted tlmt th« business of Socialists lay nearer home ; that the Transvaal War was but an event in a great world movement, of the true bearings of which we. as vet, have no know- i ledge ; and that the best thing for us to do was to pursue the even tenor of our way by restricting our efforts to various social reforms which lie near to our hand. I am glad that it is not nesessary to urge this point now, be cause practically everyone concedes the contention that our Socialism does compel us to take note of and to de fine our position towards this move ment of expansion in which the Anglo Saxon, the Teuton, and the Frank are all striving to outlive cach other. I will add one remark — That whilst full...

* THE JINGO. While Tommy Atkins fights and dies ; While editors, sans news, print lies ; Let honest people analyse— the Jingo. 'Who brags about his country's might And shouts for war with bosom light, Yet risks no carcase in the fight ? — the Jingo. Who backs his country, right or wrong, His weapons — only pen or tongue : But bullets never seen among ?— the Jingo. Who shouts so hard ' we're bound to win,' . Who revels in the battles din, But never risks his precious skin ?— the Jingo. If he would leave with all his brood. NORTHERN NOTIONS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

NORTHERN NOTIONS. ' Give me leave to speak my mind.' W. Shaksi'eahe (who else ?) B.-llina, Jan. IS. 'Ike' was here with his precious diagrams. He gave an open-air address. The wind blew great guns from the X.E., the crazy torch— stuck in an empty case — with diflioulty held its own and sputtered painfully when an extra heavy gust struck it from ' Webster's corner.' The diagrams — hung to a nail on the. verandah post — -were in constant danger, of being .swept from their moorings. The night was dark, the audience was scanty and in different, the wind blew down Ike's throat and the statistics fell like plugged shells by the way side. It was no go ; the eloquence and the figures -.were' 'caught up by the raging wind and hurled down the deserted streets, and tossed over the roofs, and wafted in moaning whispers across the rolling river and were lost in the mangrove swamps on the other side. But 'Ike' stood to his guns and made ' excellent prac tice,' as the cable liar says. He delivered...

JOTTINGS. Stock Exchange Thieves. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

JOTTINGS. [From the Saxctum.] Stock Exchange Thieves. The Monthly Share List just issued by Mossrs. Joseph Palmer and Son. of Sydney, is interesting. It tells the public — not in so many words, of course — that the Thieves of the Stock Exchange. etc., have drawn from the workers of Australia, during the past year, the sum of £6.004,824. Of this amount, il.438,953 was pro vided by the workers of New South Wales. Messrs. Palmer and Son in their report, warmly approve the Transvaal Plunder, and eulogise the patriotism of the colonies. A world of information is con tained in one paragraph : ' Al though not much has been said on the subject publicly, thought ful men, in making their invest ments, have always taken into account the risk of invasion.' Therefore, it is good to cultivate, to develope the war spirit. Of course, it stands to reason that it is only the investor who has any need to fear. The man who works and creates the investor's profit never has any wealth of his own. So he d...

TO BENEFIT THE WORKER. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

T© BENEFIT THE WGRKER. Under existing conditions any new legislation having economic effects is bound to be of injury to one section of the community. This is the result of the class an tagonism caused by a system of production for profit based upon the private ownership of land and the instruments of production. ? ? ? The Early Closing Act is operating injuriously to many people in the community. The section who are affected most in juriously by it are the small shop keeping class who employ little or no labor flhd who did the greater portion of their trade in the evening. These prople are now compell#d to shut at the same hour as their better equipped .competitors, and in many: cases it will undoubtedly mean they will lose their stand ing as dealers in furnished com modities and be driven into the labor market to sell the only commodity they will possess — their labor power. This will, however, not be of injury to the wage-earner, since the trade be ing concentrated into fewer sho...

NUTS. [Newspaper Article] — The People and the Collectivist — 3 February 1900

NUTS. The capitalist class will never give freedom to the workers. It is not. to thei ' interest to do so. They would rather spend money for working a division in' the ranks of labor than for tbur unity or benefit. If vou want to ac complish anythiag for vour class it must be done by a united movement of the working class, led by meoibers of your own class, and for the benefit of the working class. ' Socialism is coming. It is useless to oppose it. One might as well fight the tides. The pro gress of economic evolution can not be stopped. Capitalism is but its latest phase- Born yesterdav, to-morrow it must pass away.
