The Federal Campaign. MR CHANTER'S MEETING. On Tuesday evening last Mr Chanter opened the Federal campaign in the Town Hall to abont 150 persona. The Mayor occupied the chair, and asked fora fair hear ing for the speaker. iu.L vjuanmr. tvuu vvaa received wiiii ciieers, returned thanks to the electors for their continued confidence in him. It was about 20 years since he first asked for their suffier nge, and now lie was an aspirant to some thing higher — irot a provincial matter but a national duty. He offered his credentials, and if the electors considered them satisfac tory they would vote for aim for the future Federal Parliament the same as they had done for the State Parliament. A Successful 5ale. il3v oen Special Reporter). One of the most successful Bales evar held in the district was that of the Messrs Malone Brothers on Wednesday last. Mr H. Lloyd weilded- the hammer on behalf of MeBsrs Mackenzie Brothers, and there were buyers ,,,-occmt f«™r- Finlev. 'Eocuinwal, Wanganella, Mathoura, and Mooroopna. The day was a most trying one for the visitors, but the heat was partly counteracted by the iced drinks provided by the Messrs Malone. The principal interest in the sale was centered in. the draught horses, which were known- w be a spleudid lot. Cricket Chatter. TRADES v. NATIVES. ?By Duck-Egg.] On Saturday last the match between the above teams, which was commenced on the 1 2th January, was continued and concluded, and resulted in a very easy win for the Natives by 175 runs. On the first day of ihe match both teams- were disposed of for 93 runs, on the seconc? (January 19) the Natives put together 238 tor the loss of seven wickets, and on Saturday after a lapse of a fortnight, they took the total to 256 before the innings closed. The Trades with a big task before them on going to the wickets were only able to make 81, and as stated pre viously, were easily defeated. Messrs W, Matthews and F. Sparrow stood as umpires. Harrison, who was not out for 112 on the 19th January, on Saturday last was accompanied to the wickets by Robins. Mudie opened the bowling from the south end to Harrison, who Scored a single off the first ball, and three off Perrin, who bowled from the opposite end, but the jvext ball from Perrin proved fatal ...
