TILE rapid and gigantic strides which commerce lias made in all parts of the world-is, apart from our inherent mari time enterprise, considerably attributable to the introduction of steam navigation, by the means of which wo are at the pre sent-time placed in direct and regular communication witli the greater portion of the world, or at any rate all the marts of commerce or centres of population. The .beneficial results of this intercom munication are made apparent in the ab sence of unnatural gluts in the markets, or equally disturbing scarcities. It is not necessary for us to trace the increasing .-popularity of steam as a motive agent in maiiitaining and extending our commer cial relations, the extent of the steam traffic and its gradual increase speak for itself, and in the present progressive age there can be no reason, why the advan tages should not be further extended and the benefits more generally diffused; ...
