CR. G. CARTER. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 27 December 1895

Ca. G. CARTEn.-We are pleased to see this gentleman about again after his recent illness. He had been laid up for about ten days with influenza. CnesRtAr s Evs.-The 24th of De cember was ushered in in a thoroughly Australian fashion. A "brickfielder" swirled up the dust on the Flemington and Sydney roads, and, looking towards Ascot Vale and Parkville from the high "hump" near the Haymarket, one could almost imagine an artillery action was in progress at these suburbs. The shops in Errol and Queensberry-sts. as night drewon presenteda lively spectacle. The Australian people are Radical in po litics, butstaunch social Conservatives. Is the Xmas dinner among Anglo-Indians served in bungalow and barracks when the tropical sun is at it's zenith? We think not. Perhaps, at the risk of being cynical at Christmastide, we might well say verb. salp. TE AiLLEGED WASTE OF WATER. -Householders had better profit by the proceedings at the Essendon Court?on Monday. It seems that according to law no ...

THE METROPOLIS AND ITS MEAT. [Newspaper Article] — North Melbourne Courier and West Melbourne Advertiser — 27 December 1895

THE MlETITOPOLIS AND ITS. TiE disclusures recently umade in refer ence to the in at suppiied to Melbuurne owing to Lte investigatonis of certailn officials and cuomnittees, and which have been published in full in the daily Press, show a state of affairs which is alike alarming and disgusting a- larming enough to bring home the conviction that if we have hitherto kept small pox out of the colony, we have the hydatid disease lurking on all hands in our midst, and sufficiently disquieting to turn us into a connmunity of strict vege tarians. Animal food in these latitudes in summer is at the best undesirable, ex cept in small quantities, and a steak cut fromn the linest and healthiest beast is scarcely appetising when the thermome ter is standing at 90 in the shade. In deed, the carnivorous tendencies of our people are a matter for surprise all the sear round, and it is a wonder that be tween November and March they do not disappear almost altogether. However, as we seem to have made u...
