OUR MELBOURNE LETTER. WEDNESDAY, 14TH JAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 January 1880

OUR MELBOURNE LETTER. -4----- (FROa OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) WEDNESDAT, 14TH JAN. It may be safely regarded as a political axiom pregnant with startling truths, that the more a man's opponents abuse him, the more severely he has righteously punished them for their offences in the past. Judged by this standard, fearfully stinging must have been the punitive lash applied on more than one occasion, during his tenure of of fice, to the self-dubbed constitutionalparty, by the Hon. Mr. Berry. On Monday last the "righteous,' wrath of the "virtuous and prescient AnoUS" was irrestrainable because Mr. Berry could not succeed in making a better bargain when he was in England, as respects the postal service of the colony, than did the M'Cul loch and Service faction some years since. In accordance with its usual policy, in order to villify Mr. Berry, it has done its best to degrade the colony in the opinion of its English readers, and has hesitated at no misrepresentation, in the article I refer ...

CHRISTMAS DAY WITH THE LYRE BIRDS. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 January 1880

CHRISTMAS DAY WITH TIHE LYRE BIRDS. FROM THE CRESWICK ADVEITISER. Oh ! more than happy thought ! I would fly away from resawick, and I would not even seek refuge in Lake Wendource ; I would go and spend my Christmas Day in the "wilds" of Gippsland ! So I'did; and if I could only remember better, I would tell you all that befel me there. When I got into the train at Ballarat, I noticed the improved American carriage which has been introduced partially on our lines, and was struck with astonish ment at the stupidity which made our railway officials stick, for all those many years, to the old English dog boxes. I amn in some doubt as to whe ther, in a climate like ours, the society for the prevention of cruelty to ani mals Would not object to dogs being carried in the' old style of carriages. I scored one for Mr. Woods for his attempted reform in this department, anyway. The only objection I see to the new carriages is that the seats are placed too closely together; and, as, even in ho...

THE BENEFITS OF INSURANCE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE GUARDIAN. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 January 1880

THE BENEFITS OF INSU?AROCE. TO THE EDITOR OF TIIE GUARDIAN. Smn,-I wish to beneit.~my neighbors by my own experience. Some time back Mr. Rosling, agent for the Victoria Insurance Company, took great pains to induce me to insure my house, when Ianswered"I never had a fire," being, as I thought, extra care. ful, and I considered it throwing away money these bad times. However, I was induced to insure, and lucky it was that I did, for I was burnt to the ground in the day time. My wife, preparing for Christmas, was not even able to save the children's clothes and cash that were in the house. In gratitude, I say to all-INSURE.-Yours, ?C;., J. O'NEIL. --[Anvr.]

The Warragul Guardian. THURSDAY, JANUARY 15, 1880. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 January 1880

THURSDAY, JANUARY 13, 1SSO. SEEL)L , times have we called the at tention of the authorities to the press inug necessity for an appointment to be made of an honorary magistrate for the township of Warragul. At present we have five or six in the immediate neighborhood who are competent to adjudicate on any case that may be brought before them; but then, the gentlemen who hold the position are not residents in the town, nearly all of them livingthree or four miles dis tant, and therefore their services are not always obtainable when required. In a rising township like Warrngul surely we can demand that this matter should be attended to without further delay. It is needless for us to name any one individual who would be most fitted to hold the official capacity of a J.P. ; but if a move was once made in the right direction we could suggest what steps wiould be most udvisable to take. In making these remarks we base them on good grounds, as in the case of the man Clark, who wasbrought be...

PICNIC AT NARRACAN WEST. [Newspaper Article] — Warragul Guardian and Buln Buln and Narracan Shire Advocate — 15 January 1880

PICNIC AT NARRACAN WEST. (FROM OUR OWN COnRESPONDENT.) It is the custom at the approach of the festive season for all classes of the commu nity to lay aside all cares and go in for en joyment. Proving no exception to the time honored rule, the residents of Narracan West met last Thursday week to welcome the New Year, at Mr. Dumaresque's selection, which was kindly placed at their disposal. The weather proving fine, the selectors turned outlin great force, and these;, augmented by numerous visitors from town and elsewhere, formed an assemblage which could not have fallen far short of a hundred persons. In deed, MleDonald's Track, the chief thorough fare of the district, presented a scene of ani mation more like the approach to. some large town than a bush track through a country which, five or six years ago, could claim no other inhabitants but the. native bear and opossum. Soon after arriving on the!ground, sundry hampers, containing the usual Christmas delicacies, having appeared, ...
