THE EGYPTIAN ARMY. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 14 September 1887

THE EGYPTIAN ARMY, (From the London Times.) A PArIILIAMNTAIY paper has been issued containing a despatch addressed to Sir I:T. Drummond Wolff by Lieutenant.0olonel Parr from the headquarters of the Egyptian army at Oairo, relative to the effliciency and gallantry of the native Egyptian troops. Lieutenant-Colonel Parr observes : "I have received many details regarding the late fighting on the frontier, and although I, in common with all the English oflicers of the Egyptian army, have held it proved by the good behaviour of the Egyptian cavalry at Suakin, the battery of Egyptian artillery at Abu Klea, and Egyptian Camel Oorps and battery at Kiribekan, that our men would fight, and fight well, on the de fensive, I confess myself taken aback by the dash and taste for fighting shown by our men at tihe actions of Mlagrakoet and Guinniss." Colonel Parr furtlher states that at Meag raket no blacks were engaged, and at Guinniss out of the whole force of Egyptian troops engaged only 150 men w...

THE EGYPTIAN CONVENTION. [Newspaper Article] — Reporter and Illawarra Journal — 14 September 1887

THI EGYP'IrAN CONV??NTION, Tur following are the more importanut pro. visions of that celelrated Egyptian Conven. tion, which, as we all know remains still "unratified," to the great glee of French and Russian politicians, who conceive that by inducing tlhe Sultan to withhold his rati fication they have gained a great diplomatic victory; while Anglo-Egyptians think the non-ratification the better thing of the two. The affair has furnished the French with an excuse for remaining in the New He-Ibrides, but it is not probable that an excuse would bo wanting if this one ceased to be available, France and Russia object to any provision authporising the presence of British tropops in Egypt. ARnricr i. III. The Imperial Ottoman Government will invite the Powers parties to the Treaty of Berlin to approve a Convention for better securing the freedom of navigation through the Suez Canal. By such 0onvention the Imperial Ottoman Government will declare that this maritime Canal shall be always f...
