Barhurst Experimental Farm. LAST YEAR'S ACHIEVEMENTS. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Times — 13 January 1912

Balhurst Experimental Farm. LAST YEA1VS ACHIEVEMENTS. Although threshing operations have not yet been completed at the Batluil'st Experi ment Farm, the figures so far available (says the "National Advocate") indicate that the wheat yield on the demonstration aiea—which wr.s inaugurated for the pur pose of growing crops on commercial lines— will average about 30 1 lU-heJs per acre, or thtce bushels per acre in excess of the previous best return. This excellent result, which Mr. R. YV. Peacock (manager) claims is clue in a large measure to the system of soil culture followed at the Farm, was ob tained in a season that cannot be classed as good. Admittedly, the rainfall for tho year totalled 21.47 inches, or thu highest since 1001, but the distribution waa so uneven as to make the fall not nuire than about 17 nches. For instance, 032 points fell dur ing thu first two mouths of the year and 70-1 points during the last two months, so that only 1031 points were left for the eight intermed...

No. 36. RUST IN WHEAT. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Times — 13 January 1912

No. 36. RUST IN WHEAT. Keports from (ho Stnte Experiment Farms throughout the State relative to the liability of the different kinds or wheat to rust are interesting. The Manager of the Bathnrst State Farm (.Mr. Peacock) points out that during the last few years rust in wheat has not been general, and the losses from this cause has been confined to certain districts. When seasons with a rainfall above the normal return a repetition of the serious losses from rusty wheat is pre dicted, especially with such a rust-liable wheat as Federation, which is gaining so much favour among fanners. The comparative immunity from this disease during the past ten years has not con duced to caution in the choice of rust resistant or rust-proof varieties. While no district can claim to be immune from rust, some districts are more prone to the disease than others. The coastal lands are more subject to rust : and wheat-growing for grain has, in consequence, being largely aban doned. The question is an ...

LATEST TELEGRAMS. Sydney, Friday. [Newspaper Article] — Forbes Times — 13 January 1912

LATEST TELEGRAMS. Sydney, Friday. The Coroner at Murrumburrah made a number of remarkable alle gations in returning a verdict of incendiarism at the inquest on the recent fire. lie declared he had presided over a series of cases of incendiarism and it was didieulfc to find juries who would convict accused persons, as there was much sympathy shown criminals. He attributed tbe prevalence of incen diarism at Murrumburrah to over insurance, and thought the insur ance companies should be ap proached and the fact, pointed out that it was not a good policy to over insure. The annual report of the New South Wales Political Labor Lea gue, in referring to the immigra tion question, foreshadows further land taxation. The report regrets the Government have so far taken no steps to abolish the Legislative Council. Since the beginning of the year 1293 new accounts have been opened at the Moorc-strcet Govern ment Savings Bank, being an aver age of 1'18 per day. The Postmaster-General thinks Lord D...
