Tuesday, 17th Dec. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 18 December 1861

Tuesday, 17th Dec. (Before J. L. M. Carey, P.M., and Alex ander Arbucle, J P. Sydney Penny was charged with stealing a horse belonging to Mr. R J Smyth, at the Crooked River, on or about the middle of October last. The evidence was such as warranted the           magistrates in committing the prisoner for trial at the next Criminal Sessions to be holden at Sale. Mr. Well, solicitor, appeared for the prisoner. Mary Carter v. S A Harrison and Son, for wilfully destroying property         by pulling down ahut, the complainant's     property. This was a case of women's quarrels and hard swearing. The Bench very properly dismissed the case in a very summary manner, evidently indignant at the little value placed in an oath.

LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Gippsland Times — 18 December 1861

? ? ? ? School took place on Friday last, the 19th instant. Several ladies and gentlemen from the surrounding district attended and, all expressed themselves well satisfied with the result. We may be a little old fashioned in our idea of training the young, but we should most decidedly desire to see some portion of the time spent in teaching children to declaim, devoted to calculating and the rudiments of mathematics. We could not avoid noticing the almost entire absence of the parents of the children at the examination. We cannot suppose for one moment that those who send their children to school merely do so to get them out of their way. The following is a list of those who obtained prizes:— Fourth Class. General Proficiency, E. W. Hawkins; Reading snd Spelling with Greek and Latin R...
