Machine Belting [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 6 September 1878

Machine Belting. The 4°ss qf friction in machine belt ing, die consequent unnecessary strain upon the motive power, is largely due to tiia ?yant of pliancv in the materiaL Taking advantage of diis fact, Messrs. John French and Co. have intro duced an M Eclipse' machine belting, made specially from leather, which by reason of some peculiarity in die process of dressing becomes so pliant that the tenacity is increased, and the motive power relieved in a proportionate degree. An additional advantage in Messrs. French's belts Is, that they are all Land-sewii, and consequently much stronger than the ordinary machine made articles. We may notice also that leather hose is made by the same pro cesSj and also hydraulic rams and pump leathers (Wliitworth's guage) with a success which ljas been fully isecoguised by die engnineeing profession.

Artificial Leather. [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 6 September 1878

Artiftcial Leather. From time to time we hear of patented processess for the manufacture of artificial leather, a late attempt of $bi§ sort consists of fottpfig Jipmo geneous sheets of arta^oal {setter fisom curt ier?' shavings, boqts and shgemakers' cuttings, old boots, or anything which consists of leadier. Sting 33 far as practicable gleaned, die materials are subjected to die jiction of a solution of soda or other suitable alkali, of a strength proportionate to die thickness and nature of the leather to be acted on When die action of the alkali has pro duced the desinxl effect, ?which is indi cated by the. coiisidejable ' gofidng or glutinous condition' of the leadier acted on, it is removed from die alkaline solution, and soaked or washed in water in another vessel, or in a pulping or beating engine} where it then by die usual rotatory niofeibn jn die course of a few hours is converted into a homo geneous pulpy and fibrous mass. Storage of Water for Squatting and Farming Purposes. (Continued) [Newspaper Article] — Burra Record — 6 September 1878

Storage of Water for Squatting ai d Farming Purposes. {Continued ) (By James Styles.) The following remarks upon dam making .ire a continuation of tliqse in last Friday's Record : — AH the stuff ou'ht to he carried into the embankment either by dobbins, or tip-drays, and spread in layers not ex ceeding eighteen inches in thickness, the vehicles being niade to pass over as much of the loot-e earth as can conveni ently Lie done. No embankment, unless of pure strong clay, should be made by either the scoop, or casting the; earth ?with shovels, or by running it in with wheel-barrows, even although a roller be used for consolidating ft. An ordinary two-horse tip-dray, with the usual load of earth weighs about thirty cwt., which rests ii|K-ii a base eight inches wide. Therefore a roller only four and .. a, half feet long would have to be a pon derous machine weighing over ten tons to exert the same pressure on the suc cessive layers of earth. Even then, through having no lateral play, its...
