THE SPEAKING DOG [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 7 June 1947

THE SPEAKING DOC Tr. the wild backblocks of our Territory in the place where women seldom warn and the men, not bcin'r married, nor having the usual trouble of being kept awake by a female gramophone, they set lonely, put their hats on a post and talk as they like without the fear of reprisal, others take it the other way, make a pet of a cat. a dog, and any other species and teach it to do things. Some eveii adopt the organ grinding lizard of the spinifex region and make it beat time, while they whistle jazz music. Of course, the latter are in the worst statues. However, here is a man who has attempted to make his dojr talk and do all sorts of magic tricks, the Editor has, of course, only his word for all this, but the photo does show that the dog stands up and is willing to do things. Probably it is tucker time, anyway. We all sit up and take notice then and its not necessary to have four feet, either. Gordon C. and Pep, Polite Dog Gordon C. and Pep, Polite Dog

HERMANSBURG [Newspaper Article] — Centralian Advocate — 7 June 1947

HERMANSBURG The Mevmansburu' Mission is much, in the limelight these days and is indeed deserving of. con !!,r;itulat ions. It really does some thing with the natives and as much as possible does try to keep the clans apart. It also has prov ed I hat with trouble the abo has the ability to hold his way with whites in many ways. Vox ex ample, they are tauivhi the art of tannint;', a most profitable ven ture indeed, and one much wanted in the Northern Territory. That a l'- os have the ability to be artists is shown by the recent opening at. Anthony H onion's, at Sydney. There are two others doinjj; the same class of work and may soon make a name for them selves. If as it is said, the Pastor is really trying in every way to make these boys sell supporting1, then he is doinjj j-somethinp; that may help to solve the problem. We wish Faotor Albrccht the best of luck.

THE ATOM BOMB At. (!..'!!) a.m. the gas chamber at Canberra rose from an all night sitting with the chief topic — the Atom Bomb. It is pleasing to note that they mean to deal drastically with the element that thinks to leave Aus tralia defenceless, and as in 1 (?']?), in time of imminent risk have our boys fight to save a number of useless; hides, make them train with a battle, array of yam sticks, broom handles, and other handy weapons, like the rolling pin, etc. The penalty now to be imposed is a fine of £5.000 or one year in jail, or both, this, as Dr. Evatt says, may act as a deterrant. Quite right, Mr. Evatt, let us see you in i pose it for a start on the howl ers in the southern press, who have s])ilt some many gallons of ink for th past twelve months.
