(To the Editor of the Alexandra Times.) SIR, -Among the number of candidates for Road Board honors, I notice the names of men which are a guarantee to the district that ample service will be rendered to it by such men in the Board ; but I must observe that I could not fully confide in all the aspirants as I am not acquainted with the principles of some, Would it not be desirable to hear the views of all enunciated, that the electors may weigh for themselves whom to select and to reject ? A little spouting to this effect will also yield an evening's amusement; candi- dates will therefore be kind enough to name the night they will be delivered of their promises made bona fide. Yours truly, ELECTOR.

MERTON. [Newspaper Article] — Alexandra Times — 31 July 1868

M ERTON. The township of Melton is about as stupid, dull, and, uninteresting a place as ever man put his foot in. Two public houses, with a few tumbling down huts scattered about, re present nearly all the architecture of the place. The principal publican is not one of those ,uddy, rounded, robust, aldermanio gentlemen that usually represent the boni face of a country village hotel. He is a small edition of humanity, with a large, sympathetic, warm heart. Like all the rest of the world, he has had his ups and tlowns, and' the last kick he received from misfortune came' in the shape of a wandering maniac, who, without any imaginable provocation, set fire to the Istacks of hay and oats in the back yard, whilst he looked on with apparent amusement at the mischief he had done. A jury found the culprit guilty of wilful incendiarism, but that did not restore the loss of about £500 which had been sustained. Whilst we are unable to say much in favoC of the township of Merton, the distilet i...
