Dental Instructor Wins First Prize [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 25 October 1957

Dental Instructor Wins First Prize By STAN TOBIAS Dr. Berthal Hart man's colorful display of early rifles and pistols which graphically told the story of the settling of our west, won first prize for the most interesting gun collection at the Walnut Creek Gun Show recently. At the show, sponsored by the Antique Arms Association of Northern California, of which Dr. Hartman is an active member, his gun collection won out over such well known groups as Wells Fargo Co. and Harold's Club of Reno. On display "was the famous "Winchester 73," which is considered the gun that won the west for the early pioneers. Small Derringers that had traveled up and down the Mississippi River on gambling boats or had rested in the garters of many famo v s dance hall queens were also in evidence. Also the famous Colt revolvers that had been worn by outlaws and marshals alike helped to retell in vivid color the life of our country as it was from 1848-1878. Many of Dr. Hartman's guns tell a story about a pe...

Pharmacy Picnic [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 25 October 1957

Pharmacy Picnic It's too bad Casey Stengel wasn't a guest of the Pharmacy school picnic two weeks ago at Menlo Park; he would have discovered some new blood for his failing Yankees among the softball stars of the Junior class, who pushed aside- all foes with the ease of professionals. Undaunted by continuous - sprinkles and intermittent downpours, Larry McConville and Bill Piper pitched .the Class of '59 to a nine-to-four victory over the Sophomores and a ten-to-one victory over the Seniors, while the second-stringers rooted the shelter of the parking lot. Although the chief after-dinner attraction at the annual picnic was the Softball contests, the delicious steak feast was preceded by numerous other sports events. The Phi Delts lined up against the Kappa Psis for a wild ajid furious football skirmish, a cross between touch and tackle. No one bothered to keep score; in fact, no one was quite sure of the location of the goal line. a>lot of foresight and excess erfergy who...

SPORTS By MITS FUKUMURA MEDICAL CENTER BASKETBALL LEAGUE The intramural basketball league here at the Med Centel got off to a successful start last Tuesday night.' The Delts overcame a stubborn Psi Omega team by a score of 20-28, and the Zips managed to handle a spirited Kappa Psi teafi by defeating them 38-20. The Senior Meds and Soph. C, led the way to the Delts' first victory of the seasoU The Psi Omegans also had an equally outstanding player by the name of Duke Lewis who scored 24 points. The game was nip and tuck up to the last minute, but-the ball-hawking and scoring of points at critical moments by Larry Lum Frank Silvey proved to be the deciding factors. Lewis waa aided .greatly by Warren Adams, Bill Peel and Del Mobley. They handled the ball well and helped control the game while he did the scoring. Dr. Hank Chirm, Bob...

EDITORIAL [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 8 November 1957

EDITORIAL Prior to October 23, 1957 there were many problems and decisions confronting the ASUCMC Council and the Administrative Committee of the University in relation to the Guy S. Milberry Union —then they held a joint dinner meeting. Out of this meeting came the decisions that will mean that the students will have a majority vote on the Board of Governors, which, among other things, will control the student store and cafeteria. The officers of the Board will be elected from among the Board members. There are several other changes which are being written into the revised constitution. When written, this revised constitution will be submitted to the student council for final approval before being submitted to President Sprout. One should not feel that this meeting was a "cure-all," solving all our problems, but in general it could be deemed highly successful. If future relations between students and faculty can be gauged from this meeting the Union is going to be a center of which...

A MEDICAL STUDENT SPEAKS ... ROUNDSMANSHIP [Newspaper Article] — Synapse - The UCSF student newspaper — 8 November 1957

A MEDICAL STUDENT SPEAKS ... ROUNDSMANSHIP By MARDI HOROWITZ Roundsmanship is the obvious extension of Stephen Potter's exposition of lifesmanship, oneupsmanship, and gamesmanship (the art of winning games without actually cheating). A close study of this fine and succinct art is important for all medical personnel if they are to derive maximal pleasure and results from time spent on rounds. The purpose of rounds is to pad out the daily schedule of duties and to give display to the true artisans of roundsmanship. "Rounds" vary in distinction from residents' rounds, through consultants' rounds and chefs' rounds, and all the way up to grand super-rounds. Grand superrounds are a delight tp the connoisseur of ritual and rile and are ranked superior to changing the guard at Buckingham Palace as such. The colorful entourage of grand super rounds is arrayed as follows. First arrive the medical students who are neatly grouped in surried ranks and marshalled to attention by the interns and r...
