The Troth of History Vindicated!—Lin ooln geis off the following piece of extraordinary philosophy in his last message, to wit .* " It is not sa easy to pay something as it is to pay nothing, but it is eaBier to pay a large sum thaa it is to pay a larger one, and it is easier to pay any sum vriien we are able than it is to pay it before _ise are able." We insist that the ide.-i. embraced in the fore* going is not original wii.ii Abb, but that illegitimately belongs to Ben. Lucas, whose oddities are so familiar to this community. Sitting at a table of a hotel one day, when no one'happened to be disposed to engage in conversation, Ben. in his stuttering style, gravely inquired of a stranger sitting next him whether he knew what would make more noise than a pig fast under a fence ? The stranger replied with an emphatic No ! _Bs_^. —^T-t-t-two pi-o_^pigs f-f-f-fast under a f-f-f-fence! And from this anecdote Abb must have borrowed all his philosophy.

*©- There abb some good epigrammatists in the modern Athens, and their efforts are generally regarded quite favorably. Of course the " Au tocrat of the Breakfast Table" figures in the front rank. We sfebjoin a characteristic _marceau of his: Quoth Tom: " Though fair her features may be, It is her figure pleases me." " What might her figure be ?" I cried. " One hundred thousand," he replied. The annexed is also of Boston origin; and we think it reads like the Professor's: When Sarah Jane, the Moral Miss, Beclares 'tis very wrong to kisa, I'll bet a shilling I see through it: The damsel, fairly understood, Feels inst like any _Christian should—She'd rather suffer wrong than do it.
