Huxley Creates Inconceivable Society of the Future by Lisa Pavadore Collegian Staff Writer The late essayist, poet and critic, Aldous Huxley interweaved aspects of Alvin Toffler's Future Shock, in the disturbing novel, Brave New World. Huxley took the loss of individualism, a new morality, and a type of social stability, and placed them 600 years into the future in London, England. The society of this book is based on the need for stability and a "conditioned" happiness. _People are factory-manufactured and mentally conditioned to believe and act exactly like each other. Drugs are used daily in this society to maintain happiness, and frequent social activity is a part of daily life. Those who do not pursue active sex lives face penalty. The phrase "everybody belongs to everybody" is repeated throughout the book, as this society does not believe ir jealousy, love, hate, marriage, oi human biological reproductoin. In fact, monogamy and childbearing are considered dirty and of ...

Professor Lane Honored At Spring Dinner-Dance by Julie Reynolds Collegian Staff Writer As Benjamin A. Lane received the "outstanding service" award at the second annual Spring Dinner Dance held at Peak 'n' Peek Lodge April 13, he seemed to be momentarily at a loss for words. Quickly regaining his composure and sense of humor, he spoke of his relationship with his students and gave credit to the student body for the joy and fulfillment he experienced from 32 years of service to Behrend College. He stated that it was the life and vitality of the students that provided him with the most enjoyment, using his classes and humorous remarks about living so near the campus as examples. "As Carolyn (Mrs. Lane) and I sit in our living room listening to the stillness of the night, we invariably hear a loud yell from the direction of the campus," Lane said. "This usually occurs any time between 5 and 11 at night. It is this life from the students that has made my years at Behrend so en...

Eddie Murphy Appears At State College by Kevin Moore Collegian Staff Writer Though in show business for a relatively short period of time, Eddie Murphy is no longer a rising star. He has already been in three blockbuster movies (four if you count Best Defense), had a starring role on Saturday Night Live, and last year had a highly successful comedy special on Home Box Office titled "Delirious". It's impossible to name all the characters and all of the performances that Murphy has accomplished in the past three years. Murphy has even "cut" an album, but more recently he came to State College's Recreation Hall as part of his "Lawd Have Murphy" 1985 Concert Tour. This was a surprise to Perm State students in two respects; first that Penn State could get Murphy, and second that all branch campuses were given 100 tickets. As an audience member at the Murphy concert, I had the chance of a lifetime, to see Eddie Murphy. It was great. The opening act for Murphy was Lilo Thomas, an e...

SPORTS Pottorf Strikes for Perfection by Rob Roth Collegian Sports Writer On April 2 Rich Pottorf did what most bowlers only dream about; he bowled a perfect 300 game. When most average bowlers get into the seventh and eighth frames of what has been to that point a perfect game, they usually succumb to the pressure, but Rich Pottorf did not. "It wasn't easy once I reached the latter frames, but I kept my mind on the game, I really concentrated," Pottorf said. The intra-class tournament, which took place during physical education bowling class at Eastway Lanes, is unfortunately not officially sanctioned by the American Bowling Congress, but it will be remembered by all people involved. Many spectators watched the last of the 12 strikes in a row. Karin Sobotta, class instructor said, "I got to Rich's lane after the second strike. The lanes were in real good condition because they had just been oiled, and Rich just stayed very relaxed." Pottorf is known locally as a consist...

Cubs Maintain Confidence Despite Opening Game Loss by Paula Maus Collegian Feature Editor The Behrend Men's Baseball Team's season opener disappointed first-year coach Doug Young. Confidence prevails, however, since several bouts have yet to be played. The Cubs' future still looks strong. "For not playing competitive games, we've been making big strides toward being a good club," Young said. On Tuesday April 10, Case Western Reserve University stunned the Cubs in their first doubleheader, 8-2 and 4-1. "We didn't look as sharp as we should have and we made some fundamental mistakes," Young said. He was pleased with the pitching but was not "happy with fielding or hitting while men were on base." John Hansen, team captain and centerfielder, led the Cubs' with a triple, double and single between both games. The Cubs travelled to Geneva on April 11 and were shocked again. The Cubs tumbled with scores of 6-3 and 5-0 in the double-header. "Again, we had decent pitching, our fi...

Sobotta Takes Mayor's Tournament... Again by Rob Roth Collegian Sports Writer Karin Sobotta, Lady Cubs basketball coach and health and physical education instructor, has three matches, earning the right to return to the next day's semifinals. She defeated Diane Stickeli 15-10, 15-5, to capture the championship of the first two events in the four event tournament. Sobotta had only played squash once before during a practice session for the event. "It is a strange sport and it took awhile to get used to," Sobotta said, "but once I got the hang of it I played well." The event took place at the downtown YMCA. The next scheduled event is tennis, to be held May 11 and 12 at the Pennbr iar Tennis Club. Tennis is Sobotta's strongest event and a victory would capture the overall title for the multitalented athlete.
