CORRESPONDENCE. [Newspaper Article] — Auckland Star — 12 April 1884

CORRESPONDENCE. Sericulture, (To tho Editor.) SiR.-Reading last night's "SMB.I' I nnd you misunderstood part of what I said about pilk-culturo in my letter of the 6th instant, which you were kind enough to publish. I do not""acknowledge," at all, "that investors would bo exposed to the imminent chance of failure and the abandonment of the money sunk." Nothing of the kind. I havo full confidence in the success of silkculture. The only drawback at present is that wo have no suitable mulberry trees. If the thing is to be introduced, we must naturally start by planting trees. It takes some time till they are grown up. When wo have once the trees, a stock of healthy eggs, and, if tho matter is managed by competent men, it will undoubtedly be a success. I can't understand why you should insist that silk-culture should be tried by itself. In the field where the mulberry trees prow, you see, in France and Italy, w...

Anything so pathetic as the " last dyingspeech of the Tauranga '' Telegraph " has not come under our notice for some time. Hear the dying wail :—" We hope our efforts have not been vain ; for, like Bret Harte s Parson-' What'er we sot ourselves to do—We done our level best.'—But alas! fate and a bill of sale have been against us. Into the hands of the 'Buster1 we deliver tnee, oh Tauranga ! Would that thy fate were less awful. But Poverty is impotent, and we must needs bow to all-powerful Mammon and say, Adieu !" VVhy do they call the man who gets married the groom, pa ?" asked a little boy. _ Because he curries favour with his motherin-law, was the reply, " and tries to saddle his debts on his wife's father."
