THE DEMOCRAT. T. McDONALD Editor. PLYMOUTH, IND. Thursday Morning. May 14th, 1857. Iflodcrn Spiritualism. We call the attention of the reader to an article on this subject, which will be found on tho Crst page. We hare read a great many articles of late on spiritualism, but have seen none that we so fully endorse as the one we refer to. There is no doubt but many wise and good persons have been led far astray by this spiritual delusion We never believed for a moment, that thos strange phenomena, such as mov ing Tables and furniture beating Drums and Tamborins, and lapping, etc., etc were performed by the spirits ti those who hare cone "to thatbonrne from which no traveler returns." In the first place wo arc inclined to the opinion, that such a theory is not in har mony with th Bible: that it is contrary to reason, and that tho character of the com munications purporting to be made; forbid the idea that they were from good spirits, even if such a thing were possible. We find by readi...

gl ITütal gfprlmntt. n. JIcnOTJULB, JEtlitor." Our Population. Tho Jbrwm ßavs tho town of South m Bend polls about six hundred votes, which, according to the usual estimate of five persons to each roter, will make a population of about three ihouso ndf Whew 1 At the Corporation election in this place on List Monday week, two hundred and thirtj-three votes were polled, giving us a population of eleven hundred and fifty. One man, who has lived here for three ysars past, was not allowed to vote because his family was not here. Counting him one in the way of population, together with the ratio, five, added thereto, mate six, which increases our population to eleven hundred and seventy-one. We think that re can safely pat down seventy-five who did not vote, on account of the inclemency of the weather, which number added to the above, together with five for each voter, gives us a population inside of the Corporation limits of fifteen hundred and fiftysix! We do n't suppose any person will...

Fr na th? loiiin Sute Journ. Uly Boyhood' Dream is O'er. My boyhood a dream of love ia o'er, A lid with it td, the joyous hopes that clang Like iweet voiced songsters 'round my heart And to its merry beating blithely fcung. Their sweet tonga linger round me still Tho sad and cheerless now they seem For ah! those fond strains call to mind The nappy vision of my boyhood's dream. How bright tho3e boyish dreamings were, Of constant hearts, and love and friendship true, Of future hours of perfect bliss, Of moments crowned with joy- and sorrows few. But now that glorious dream is o'er And ah! the waking is most sad, From joy and hope and happiness, To find my life in sorrow's vestment clad. Like children on th ocean shore, I gathered shells, struck by their beauty rare; And of the spirit never dreamed. Whose sad-voiced whispers now so pain my ear. And oh! how they sadly whisper on. Of my own being now apart; For though Pre thrown the shelte away. Their low sad murmurs linger in my heart. ...

THE DEMOCRAT. T. McDONALD. Editor. PLYMOUTH, IND. Thursday Morning, June 4th, 1857. Kansas. It seems difficult to ascertain what course the republicans of Kansas -will pursue in the cominsr election for Delerates. Some of the leaders of the party in the States advise them, as they have the power, to use it; others arc of the opinion that the cause of republicanism would be furthered by them standing aloof entirely. As we have frequently stated, and we see nothing in the reports from that country to cause us to change our views, vre are inclined to the opinion that they will permit Kansas to frame a constitution recognizing slavery, in order to have their predictions verified. All intelligent men acknowledge that a large majority of the residents are opposed to slavery, and could easily elect a majori ty of Delegates who are opposed to that institution. They have stated time and again, that the democrats were determined to force slavery into that territory, and in order make to good ...
