j Cbe Dairy j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1899

j Cbe Dairy j -THE DAIRY . Mr . W . H . Barber , of Libertyville , Iowa , writes : Every man of a family should if possible be possessor of a dairy , as the word dairy may contain one cow , fifty or a hundred , nnd the cows may be of any breed , though some breeds are far superior to others for the dairy . Thirty years ago dairying in our state was in its infancy , but it has been enjoying a very healthy growth , and today dairying in Iowa is one of the most enterprising and successful businesses we have , though southern Iowa is in the rear compared with northern Iowa . Let us see what Iowa lias done with her dairy and products for the year Just passed , 1808 . Within the borders- of our -state we • have 94 G creameries , an average of 9 i £ creameries to each county . The number of pounds of butter shipped was 92 , 299 , 211 , a decrease from 1897 of 7 , 243 , 473 pounds . The decrease is largely accounted for by the high , price of calves . The average value of our creameries is ...

Berkshire Sales j - ——— - ^* - ——— - ^»—— [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1899

Berkshire Sales j - ——— - ^* - ——— - ^»—— BERKSHIRE SAILES . The year 1899 has been one of unusual prosperity to the breeder of the up-to-date Berkshire who has advertised in The Farm Home . The demand for good Berkshires of approved breeding has far exceeded the supply and the breeder who has not sold all of his surplus stock at good prices , has either neglected to advertise or has failed to follow up letters of inquiry with the same degree of earnestness and frequency of correspondence characteristic of his more enterprising competitor . The breeders of Berkshires who have sold more stock In 1899 than dn any previous year and at better prices are the aggressive letter writers Who convince correspondents thalt they have the pigs to fill the requirements of prospective purchasers . The month of December , 1 *& 9 , makes a better showing In number of transfers than the report of sales published tn our last Issue for November , which made a very gratifying showing . The i...

I Soutbdouw Sheep j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Home — 1 December 1899

I Soutbdouw Sheep j FLOOK NOTES . Before this reaches our readers 2 , 000 pedigrees for Volume III of the American Southdown Record will have been recorded . The greatly increased interest in Southdowns is plainly Indicated by the short time in which these 2 , 000 pedigrees have been received for registry . The recording of the 3 , 000 pedigrees in Volume VII . that was issued in February , occupied a period of two years and four months , while the same number of pedigrees for Volume VIH . have been secured in nearly one years less time . Volume VMI will , as in Volume VII , be beautified and made valuable by the presentation of soame good pictures of typical Southdown sheep . Breeders who desire representation in this picture feature of the volume may do so by supplying the necessary half tone or electrotypes . No pictures will , however , be here • presented except those that are considered worthy . Mrs . F . W . Barrett , Wadsworth , N . Y ., writes that she had great sales last ...

¦ « . »» . »»»»»» > t » M j Poultry m . mim . IHI SELECTION OF BREEDS AND BREEDING . Mr . George Ertel writes : A mistake is oftentimes made ln selecting fowls of a breed that ls not suited for the purposes for which they are to be kept . If egg production is the all-important point , it is a most serious mistake to select a breed of fowls that Is not noted for tffls product . If , on the other hand , meat is the chief object , an expensive mistake will be made if any but the heavy-bodied fowls are chosen . The small , active , nervous , egg-producing breeds cannot compete with the larger phlegmatic Asiatics for meat production . Then , too , if fowls are kept for both meat and egg-pro-duction , some breed of the middle class should be chosen . These , while they do not attain the great size of Asiatics , are sufficiently large to be reared profitably to supply the table with meat , and at the same time have the tendency for egg production developed sufficiently to produc...
