gRI & QD ^ gOO ^^ II The Grange | j [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1907

gRI & QD ^ gOO ^^ II The Grange | j PARCELS POST Section of the Master s Address Delivered at the Annual Meeting of the National Grange . THE evidence submitted to congress in the past year has been sufficient to convince every member of that body that the farmers of the entire country are a unit in their desire for the early establishment of a parcels post . In addition to this universal demand from the country districts there is a large demand from the cities , and there can be no question in the mind of any unprejudiced investigator that a large majority of the American people favor this measure . Notwithstanding these facts the opposition has been sufficient to deter congress from taking any action , and I regret to say that I have no hope of seeing the early establishment of a parcels post unless a vigorous campaign , in which all those in favor of it are united in a combined effort , is waged to secure it . I recommend to your consideration the advisability of the ...

COUUHTT TITSTD THEM A janitor of a school threw up hia job . When asked the trouble , he said : I m honest , and I wont stand being slurred . If I find a pencil or handkerchief about . the school when I m sweeping I hang or put it up . Every little while the teacher , or someone who is too cowardly to face me , will give me a slur . A little while ago I seen wrote on the board , Find the least common multiple . Well , I looked from cellar to garret for that thing , and I wouldnt know the thing if I would meet it on the street . - A MICHIGAN DUGOUT [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1907

- A MICHIGAN DUGOUT ( By E . V . Benedict . ) D TJEINS ono of the big snow storms that visited Northern Michigan the past winter , drifts were piled high along . the streets of one of the well known and popular resort cities . In a deep drift which had formed itself across a vacant lot some school children with the aid of their parents constructed a curiosity in the shape of a dugout or snow-hut . Through a small opening in the side of the drift whieh thoy had made for a doorway , they shoveled out the snow till a small circular room was formed , having an arelied roof overhead supported by two pillars in the center . Then witli the hard frozen ground for a floor , a length of stove-pipe in the roof doing duty as chimney and a blanket hung over the opening for a door , the playhouse was complete on tho inside , while a . little shoveling , a liberal sprinkling of water and a night s frost completed the whole thing . The roof being solid and smooth and icy formed a very good toboggan...

WHY BIRDS GO SOUTH [Newspaper Article] — Farm Press — 1 January 1907

WHY BIRDS GO SOUTH Did you ever wonder , boys and girls , why , as winter draws . near , so many of our birds leave us and go South ? Some of vou havo always thought , no doubt , that they are driven away by the cold . It is true that some birds would have a hard time to keep warm during our coldest weather , but there is another more important reason why they leave us . Suppose that all the birds that we have here in the summer time stayed with us all winter , where and how would they get their food ? Birds eat seeds , such as ragweed , smartweed , rib grass , tick trefoil and pigeon grass , all of which are buried underneath the snow in the winter time . They are fond of wild grapes and berries , such as wintcrgreen , partridge , sumac , black alder , dogwood , cranberries and even the berries of the poison ivy . Some birds will eat acorns , and some like the buds of trees , especially those they find on the apple , ironwood , birch and poplar trees . Most small birds eat mushroom...
