Planting Forests , [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

Planting Forests , A statesmanlike regard for the future prosperity of the country , is indicated by measures recently introduced both in Congress and our Constitutional Convention to require the planting of forests on the treeless prairies of our State and of the great and arid plains of the far west . Senator Thayer of Nebraska , has introduced into the United States Senate , a bill , requiring those viho take homesteads to plant aud cultivate a certain quantity of their lands in forest trees . And Mr . Joseph Medill of Chicago , has proposed an amendment to our State Constitution , providing for the planting of trees along all public roads and highways , without the limits of cities and villages . His remarks upon this subject were highly interesting and his views should be generally understood . He proved by deductions from known facts , that if onetenth of the area of our prairies was covered with trees , it would reduce the average heat of summer seven degrees and lessen the s...

Trlclilnn Spiralis . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

Trlclilnn Spiralis . Six persons are still futtering from this terrible disease at Genoa , and l : i the neighboring town of Hampshire ; tho sufferings of four have been ended by death . One , a large athletic man , died on Saturday last , in rcgony ( says an eye witness ) as great as it is possibe for human nature to suffer . Another , an elderly woman seems likely soon to pass away ; the others are improving . Dr . Green , of Marengo , who is attending the sufferers , thinks that the disease , if taken in its earlier stages , is curable , and congratulates himself that the remedies he prescribes , nre having n good effect . We are indebted to Dr . Garvin , of this c ty , for an opportunity to inspect through a powerful microscope , a piece of the Bolognt sausage , mide from the trichiuous pork which no dpubt was the cause of the malady . The little parasites which cause the fearful torture , were plainly visible . When they have gained access to the human body , through eating the...

A ajccinre . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

A ajccinre . On Thursday evening , the 30 th of Dec , I went to listen to a lecture to be delivered by a lady who had been publicly announced , a lady of rare intellectual abilities . No one who heard her could doubt the truth of the announcement . Certainly the discourse was an exceedingly flue one . But the subject of MY discourse is not the lecture , but the audience . Count your fingers five timas over and you will have fully numbered the listeners . On a pleasant evening with no other attractions to draw them away , the whole city of Sycamore could furnish but a half hundred persons who cared for an intellectual treat of this character . One day last summer a stranger coming into Sycamore , would have enquired the cause of the-great crowd in the streets . In holiday attire , young and old , women and men , boys and girls , all were hurrying in one direction . From all the country round about the crowd poured in . Work was neglected—school forsaken—everything forgotten . And for...

Holiday FestivlllM . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

Holiday FestivlllM . The classic shades of Kilkenny , Tipperary or Donnybrook fair could hardly have furnished a Christmas row more grateful to the tastes of Young Ireland , than was one that was gotton up among the Hopkin s families residing in the vicinity of Air . Stacy Kinyons , in Ohio Grove . The trouble arose in some real or fancied insult given on their r . turn from the celebration of mass at Lodi on Christmas day , when all hands wore under the excitement of the flowing bowl that inspires so many Christmas festivities . This wns supplemented by an attack by one branch of ilie family , armed with a gun , knives , pitchforks , and club upon the dwelling of Mike Hopkins ; and poor Mike was beaten and stabbed severely . Not satisfied with tha f , they proceeded to prosecute Mike for assault and battery but after a long trial at Lodi , Mike was acquitted and now he esters complaint agnuj 6 t his accuser and assailants for riot . The trial commences to-day at Blackberry . _ *••-...

THE FIRST SHOW PA 1 . I .. [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

THE FIRST SHOW PA 1 . I .. BY JAUCS EDSSELL LOWEUi . The snow bad begun In the gloaming And busily all the night Had been heaping field and highway With a silence deep and white . Every pine , and fir , and hemlock Were ermine too dear for an earl , And tho poorest twiff on the elm tree Was fringed inch deep with pearl . From sheds now roofed with Carrara Came chanticleor a muffled crow : The stiff rails were softened to awan a down , And still fluttered down the snow . I stood and watched by the window Tho noiseless wort of the sky , And the sudden flnriea of Bnow-biras , Like brown leaves whirling by . I thought of a mound in sweot Auburn , Were a little head-atono stood—Bow the flakes were folding it gently , As did robins the babes in tho wood . Up spoke our little Mabel , Saying , Father , what makes It snow ? And I told ot ( he good All-father , Who cares for us all below . Again I looked at the snow fall , And thought of the leaden sky , Tbatarchd o er first great sorrow , Wh...

ICE-MAKING . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

ICE-MAKING . Mature and Art—Detailed Description ot the Processor Ice-Maklng-The Possible Uses of Dry-Cold Air . Correspondent of the Boston Advertiser . PHILADELPHIA , Dec . 14 , 1869—To control Nature we have to use lier own ways and forces ; and sometimes we must imitate her very contradictions . A good instanceof this is the modern method of mating ice from fire , as compared with nature s mode of raising hail-storms in July . She goes to work thus : Tb . 8 sunshine heats the earth , expanding the contiguous air , and to a slight extent displacing it by still lighter aqueous vapor . This vapor in turn acts like the glass of a green-house , freely transmitting the bright heat rays , but shutting in those dark ones which the earth would have sent back into space . — Thus the heat increases itself , and the barometer ialls , till heavier air from a distance crowds in under these expanded strata , and forces them up , as if through a long chimney . They push up before them the nn wa...

Fashions For January . [Newspaper Article] — True Republican — 5 January 1870

Fashions For January . The great change that has taken place in the styles since last winter is more than ever apparent , now that we see the costumes en masse upon the street or in the drawing room . It is four years now since the change from the hoops , which had become somewhat more moderate , took place , to the perfectly plain gored , or , as it was called , Princesse skirt . We well remember ( he excitement tho first two or three created in the salons , and the contrast with the bell shaped garments generally worn . Tho Princesse was , however , found too restricted , and little round aprons , called Freemasons , were introduced , which were the beginning of the present upper skirt , with its round tablier and not ungraceful panier . Tiic change from a short apron and a straight cut gored skirt to a short upper skirt , and a petticoat with some fullness in , does not seem so very great , but it is very apparent when the skirts and paniers and sashes , and all the frills and fu...
