Why I Bred Berkshires [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

Why I Bred Berkshires Dear fellow breeders and friends , wish to give you a few of my reasons through our valuable paper , why I started breeding Berkshire hogs . My first reason was because they were such a nice large hog with such masterly appearance , yet seemingly very kind and gentle . Second , that they are good rustlers . My old sows take their brood and gently move over the alfalfa pasture , picking a little here and a little there , keeping the pasture feed down about as much at the fartherest corner as at the nearest . Very different from the first breed of hogs I ever owned . They would go out and feed in the nearest shed today and the same tomorrow and so on , until they had the grass killed out for a radius of ten to fifteen rods from the house . By so doing , they failed to raise their small brood , which was usually twins or triplets . Would not have enough exercise to develop any muscular strength , so would soon die with thumps . 1 also owned a bunch of sows not man...

The Best Thing on American Soil . [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

The Best Thing on American Soil . We may differ in our views on political questions . We may differ on religion . We may differ on national issues . We may differ on our views as to the city or country life . We may prefer mountain scenery or forests . We may choose the valley or the plain . We may choose agriculture or commerce as our occupation but somewhere among them all there is a center of attraction above them all . It has been written by able men that the best thing on Amercan soil is its boys and girls . It has been written by others that the great men of our nation who framed the constitution , drafted its by-laws and fought its battles for liberty and freedom , are the grandest , noblest and best things on Amerian soil . My attention has been called to all of these and I have weighed them up time and time again . But to me , and I believe to every true American , there is one thing that stands higher and first of all things in our nation , I mean the Mothers of America . ...

How Many Pigs ? [Newspaper Article] — Berkshire World and Cornbelt Stockman — 1 February 1910

How Many Pigs ? It is not the number of pigs that a sow farrows that spells so much as the number she brings to safe weaning . Some breeds are noted for superfluous prolificacy , the sows farrowing more pigs than they can properly nourish , Berkshire sows farrow about the right number for best results . Any sow that raises six to seven pigs a year is a moneymaker , if she is a good sow and the pigs are intelligently handled . Some day the Berkshire Association and other swine registry Associations will peresefve records of farrowing performances , so that the character of prolificacy may be studied and increased if necessary . We do not know at present , nor is there any way of ascertaining how many pigs per sow would strike the Berkshire average . There Is a considerable difference in the fecundity of sows . Some drop 12 to 15 at a litter ; other 6 to 8 . Which is the more profitable ? That depends , as we have suggested , on the number weaned by the dams . Uusually sows farrowing ...
