I RV if fe i VOL. 5. NO. 22. A GRAN POW-WO W The Bed Men Excursion to Be midji, Sunday, Successful- Train Loads of People from all Points-Three Days of Feast and Gaity, Mnsic and Melody- A Happy Crotfd. Had the census taker been on "hand Sunday afternoon, Beuridu would probably be found with double its every-day population. The occasion of the Red Men's pow-wow here was ate successful as were similiar ones undertaken by our people heretofore. All preparations had been made for entertaining all who came and we believe none of the visitors liad any reason to kiek over the manner of their reception- or treat ment while here. J. I Reynolds cted as Big Chief of Reception .and the braves of the local tribe, "No. 39, togged up in war paint to guide the visitors through Bemid ji's happy hunting grounds. About 200 visitors from Brain erd, headed by the unexcelled Dreskells Band, arrived ou a spec ial car Sunday forenoon and were marched up to the wooden statue of "Chief Bemidji" on 3rd stree...

A BART CHAPTER XII. ILL you have the kindness to rinjj that bell again, Harriet, and in quire whether Mrs. Withers has return- ed?" fretted the convalescent, "It is after six o'clock, and I am faint for want of nourish- ment." The duteous dependent obeyed, then lipped from the room to push inves tigations upon a plan of her own. In a quarter of an hour she reappeared with an agitated, yet important counte nance, that arrested her cousin's re gards. "What is it? Where is she?" he de manded, impatiently. "You have heard something. Tell me at once what it Is-"* Harriot collapsed as gracefu as her unpliant sinews and stays would allow Into a kneeling heap upon the floor at bis feet. "My beloved cousin! My dear, deceived angel! I have heard nothing that surprised me. I dared not speak of it to you before now, agonizing as was my solicitude. You would have driven me from you in anger had I whispered a word of what has been the town gossip for months, to which you only were blinded by your...

FARM AND GARDEN. MATTERS O INTEREST O AGRICULTURISTS. Some rp-to-mto Btnta About Cul tivation of tbe Soil and Yield* TbereofHorticulture, Viticulture and Floriculture. Tile Drainage. (Condensed from Farmers' Review Sten ographic Report of Wisconsin Round-up Institute.) N. B. Becker spoke on tile drainage. In part he said: The changes in the soil caused by draining are manifold. Plants are not so easily killed by severe frosts In winter, because the ground is left more dry and porous. It allows cultivation earlier in the spring, and all through the year after heavy rains. It causes the soil to sooner obtain a certain warmth in such a degree that on simi lar kinds of soil a location from two to three hundred miles southward would not be better. It keeps the soil more porous and mellow, because it will never be fully saturated with water, which would cause it to bake like a brick if very dry weather fol lows heavy rains. i It gives more effect to manure and therefore insures better cro...

Wit m\i\\ fiwtm. KAISER GRKELY. Publishers. BEMIDJI, MINNESOTA. Authors who think it is a mark of originality to run down Chicago have evidently forgotten about Mr. W. T. Btead of England. On its own showing the Chinese gov ernment has demonstrated that it has not the ability to govern, and unfortu nately the truth is likely to be worse than anything at which it has so far hinted. The natural inference would he that the jury which awarded a New York man $750 because he was deprived of his sleeping berth was composed ot Philadelphia men. By no others is a single night's rest valued so highly. The suspicion is becoming stronger and stronger daily that the person who was in charge, of the signal sta tion at Mole St. Nicholas during the exciting hours of our late unpleasant ness with Spain has been transferred to Shanghai. A steady diet of sulphur and mo lasses is said to be a perfect protection against mosquito bites. The insect is eaid to be antagonistic to the atmos phere that surrou...

On Au^. 2, the Supreme Court of Minnesota in the appeal of thegent First Natl.Bank of Detroit,Minn against the Board of Co. Commis sioners of Becker and Beltrami counties, handed down the follow ing opinion in favor of defendants*. The complaint alleges that in the year 1871 the county of Bel trami was an established or un yet organized county, for record and judicial purposes and so continued to be attached until May 1897, when it became an organized county. That during such time the affairs and business of the county of Beltrami were carried on and managed by the several county officers of the county of Becker. My Fellow Laborer." By H. RIDER HAGGARD. CHAPTER VI.(CONTINI:EU. i Exactly six months from that day my boob, "The Secret of Life," appeared, and everybody will remember the ex citement that ensued. Of course, prop ositions HO startling were violently at tacked, but I only smiled and waited for I knew that my conclusions could no more be seriously disputed than the ixv of gravitation. And now the at tachers are all silent, and mankind (I ay it wthout false modesty and with out pride) blesses the man who Has been the means of demonstrating the glorious cause and objects of our Mtberto inexplicable existence, and of applying the key to the mystery of life, and the agony of death, that Is, as the religions foreshadowed, but the portal to the larger and more perfect Ma, Yes!
