This place is the haunts of the "red light" classes of the under world, and being on the Mississippi river, it is a hard pluce for the ollicers to .watch. Ho was shot by an unknown party, who was in ambush, waiting for his victim. Smith was shot in the back of the head with a shot gun, the charge en tering the base of the skull and com pletely dislocating every bone, at such close range that the wadding was im beded in the wound. Smith was a quiet, peaeablo man, and it is said he hud no enemies; he lished and attended to the river lights for a livlibood, and saved his money. It is thought he had several hundred dollars.
