Ter with Charlie's unfortunate father, and for Charlie himself had always had so mnoh friendly interest that bo regarded his position, now that he* was to see him tried for his life as peculiarly pain ful, but not the less from all these con siderations was he resolved to judge the ease with the strictest justice, and no more mercy than he would have shown to the most wretehed outcast. So that his face was very set and stern when he took his place that morning in theThere judge's chair. The prosecuting attor ney was a sharp, shrewd man, resolved to make tho best ot a very pretty case, without fear or favor for any one. As for the prisoner's two counsel, Mr. Putnam and Mr. Gray, they both looked £raTe 8S both fully aware of the almost utter hopelessness of their cli ent's case. Poor Charlie! who can ever guess what he suffered during that long, bright September day He was very pale when they brought him in court, but his face had a noble look of calm resignation, and in his eyes ther...

gte gUroj Journal w. MITCHKLLTEPITOR. Thursday, May 14, 1868. MR. DOHJIELLY'S SPEECH. Having given in fall tho letter of Hon. 13. Washburne, we publish thia week the speech of Hon. I. Don- nelly, Member of Congress from this District, in reply to the charges and insinuations contained in that 'etter. Now that the furor, created by politi- cians for a special purpose, has subsided, we presume that the people will be calm and dispassionate enough to give the speech a careful reading, rendering credit for what is correct and substan tiated by facts, and condemning what is improper. And we trust that think ing men will be allowed to speak favor- ably of such portions as their judgment may approve, without being denounced as "Donnelly" mtn—eutirely, com pletely and irrecoverably committed to and owned by that gentleman. It will be remembered that the let- ter of Mr. Donnelly, written to Senator I county Gen Folsom, of this State, was a brief and I courteous cne, stating the fact of th at...

•9-ft W. I E EDITOR. Thursday, May 21, 1868. E S E KL.K VKN'VI A I E O S O O E S Stor is a On Saturdo)', May 16th, the Senate proceeded to vote on the Eleventh Ar ticle of impeachment. It has been gen erally understood that the Eleventh Ar ticle would get wore votes in favor of conviction than any other. The result of the vote was as follows: Guilty 3 5 not guilty 19. Necessary to convict, 36. The Impeachment court thereupon adjourned to May 26th at 12 M., when the vote will be taken on the remaining articles. Nothipg can be more huuiil-' iating to the Republican party, and in fact to the lovers of liberty throughout the world, than the result of this vote. A few journals yet flutter themselves that somehow or in some way the great criminal will yet be convicted. W see no hope. The Republican party is betrayed—not only by Andrew John son, and Poolittlc, and Norton, who long ago went over to the enemy, but by men whom it has cherished up to the latest hour: Van Winkle, Ross, Henderso...

.IOAK O A It was the oil 01 uivine origin which quickeucd tho devout heroism of the Maid of Orleans, and impelled her to dear, by hor valiant arm, the road to Kheiius. After tho brilliant seigo of Orleaus, and when tho English were stunned with tho blow, 6ho declared for an immediate march to the "sacred city," with Char'es VII., that he might be nnnointed king with tho sacred oil. The English had made a great mistake, when by their early victories they might have crowned their young Henry VI. at Rheims, in neglecting to perform an act of such vital importance to the cause. Joan of Arc, by her valor at Orleans, has now tho opportunity oi anticipating the enemy, and this she determined to do. Her proposition was deemed rash by the leaders of the Trench army. Not a voice was for her. Tho politicians and tho strong heads of the council smiled they were for going slowly and surely, that is to say, that the English mi*ht have time to resume their cour age These counsellors all gave mtcr ...
