LEWISBUKG CHRONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. Flams, vs. Bags. We could raise any amount of plums, of almost every variety, if it were not for that same formidable "bug," the curculio, which is so fatal to this fruit everywhere rise. It seems to have been created on purpose to mate plums, valuable, for if it were not for him we could raise them so plentifully that they would be of little comparative value in the market. This insect is a sly rogue. lie will went a plum tree and be into it before yon are aware of it, and when you find him out and attempt to seize him, he will curl himself up and 'make believe dead,' as the little boy said who caught one of them and found hhn motionless. We have published every plan that wc have met with for destroying this nuisauce, but lie continues to triumph. It may however be remarked here that it is of but little use for one or two individuals to make war ; upon this Ix-st, when others in the neigh borhood, who have fruits that they will live upo...

Fm tb Pa. Fsrm Journal. Michigan Double Plough. Mr. Sjtangler. remit u to call the attention of Farmers to the Michigan Double Hough. We gave it a thorough trial, with three of the best patterns of nloujfhs in our neighborhood, having spent a full day in testing its qualities in loam, I heavy clay and strong soil, and have no hesitation in saying that in any soil the work is more thoroughly and better done, than by any plough we have seen in use. The surface has more the appearance of being fpaded than ploughed, and the fur rows are scarcely distinguishable. For the satisfuction of those who have not seen the plough or a draft of it, we give the description of the Patentee. " The plough consists of two ploughs, placed one bofore the other, on the same beam. The forward one takes a furrow from 3 to 6 in ches deep, separating the roots of the gross or vegetable matter, and lays its slice sur face down in the bottom of the previous ; furrow : and the hind one furrows from 5 to 6 inches...

LEWIS'BUKQ CHEONICLE & WEST BRANCH FARMER. Taking the Census. An EUhrly Ltuly Cawjht.Dic taking of the last census has given us a score tf capital stories, but until yesterday we Jo not recollect having stumbled upon the following. We pick it up as an estray, going the rounds without credit : Last fall a census taker, on a tour of duty, stopped at an elegant brick dwelling bouse on Western Row the exact location of which is no business of t-urs. He was received at the door by a stiff, well dressed elderly lady, who eould be easily recognized as a widow of some years standing. On lear ning the mission of her visitor, the lady invited bimto sit iu the hall. Having ar ranged Liuiself into a working position, he inquired for the number of persons iu the family of the lady. " Eight, sir," replied ihe lady, "includ ing myself." " Very well your ftge, madam V " My age sir," she replied, with a pier ring, dignified look ; " I conceive it's none f your business, what my ago might be yon a...
