The war situation In Europe is critical, Not only Is a great battle hmminent-lWe French Empire Is laI extreme periL On the 16th of July France declared war. The French armies were thrown on the Prussian frontier,and Rhelish Prussia was apparently destined to be the theatre of another stu pendous struggle. The army of France concentrating on the Moselle was estimated at 000,000 mea; that of Prussia at 800,000 men. The preponderance Indicated sue cesm for the French arms. The main army moving through Metz was esteemed strong enough to hold the Prussians while McMahon's corps advancing toward Stras burg, threatened to turn the left dank of the Prussian armies, and apparently com pelled their withdrawal to the banks of the Rhine.
