[Continued from first pngc.1 ists in a peculiar portion of tlhe North, that when the war was ¢ forced upon the South by ntggress ions on the constitutional rights of the Southern people, there were no insurrections among the Southern negroes. There was no rcepetition of the frightful scenes enacted by the emancipated slaves of the Wes, Indies. The 'young master' shoual dered his musket or bueckelced on his sword, and his faithful man. servant accompanied him to the war, kept his arms in order cook' ed his hard-tack as best he might, bore him from the field when woun ded, and nursed thim with tender ness and skill. Walter Scoott or G. P. R. James never threw more glamour around the Knight's Squire, than was really practiced in the Confederate army, by the Fquire's African representative. Nor was T this influeace more beautifully is ore exemplified in war and among the firstc men-the 'Southern chivalry'- than it was in both peace and war old m, in religion and among the women. ss Ther...

NOVEL TI T anORY FOR PRIt VENTION OF SUN STROKE. Says the Syracuse Journal : We give the lfolowing specific for sun stroke, which may save from illneo w or death many whose rccupation compell them to be in the field or in the street : About a year ago I saw in a newspaper an account of a case of sunstroke written by the party himtnelf. After suffering a long time from the attack, and having to a considerable degr ee recovered, he experiencad consider able suffering even from the rayes of the moon, This led him to re flect that ;t was not altogether the heat of the sun that produced prostration. After much research he discovered that the injury came from the chemical ray, and not T from the heat ray. He was guided to this by observing the fact that f a photograph could not be taken st through a hollow glass. Accord ingly he lined his hat with two olde linings -one of orange-yellow to arrest the chemical ray, and one of green to arrest the heat ray. Thus prepared, he west where the ra...

TII ; TitEASURY-ISIP CON TEST. ihen we consider the chareoer and capucity of all the gentlemen who were aspirants for the position, it is at the first glance a little difficult to account for the stub bo'nness even approaching desper ation which characterized the struggle for the Trensuysahip at the Baton Rouge Convention. There was no question at all that either Mr. Richardson, Mr. Aloucaur or Mr. Burke would dischidi'getlhe du ties of the office withl ability and fidelity. After the friends of each had expressed their choice, we might naturally have expected that one of tiem would have been with drawn, And then, of course, the re sult would have been settled by a single ballot. This escape from the deadlock we might have look ed for with the more reason, since Is there was really no principle in volved in the contest. The truth is that the city members had gone to Baton Rouge pretty thoroughly le imbued with, the idea that the po sition belonged of right to New I Orleans for this...

TI'E FEVER AT GRENADA. Da. MANDEVILLE'S OBSERVATION. Dr. W. R. Mandevillo returned Th'hrsday from Grenada, where he has been doing yeoman service. 1)r. Mandeville states that it is dif ficult to obtain any exact statistics in regard to the fever in that town on account of the contusion which nlecessarily prevails. As far as he is able to judge there have been about 103 deaths, and there are sill about forty persons in the town who are liable to the diseases lihe cases have occured not on ly in the town but within a cir cuit of several miles without the limits, which greatly augments the labor of attending them. He de scribes the fever as being of a very malignant type, and in many instances of two or more parox ysms. Black vomit is not frequent in the fatal cases; the disease 'seems to attack the kidneys more violently than is generally observ ed in yellow fever, and -ometimes the patient die from effusion of blood in the brain. Rapid congestion is the charac teristic of the type, a...
