CLARKE COCRIER JOHN O CROWN, <_dltor ?nd Proprietoi. v> r.iLNESDAY, MAR. I 4. 1900. The Ourrensy Bill. Now, that the Conference Commit? tee of the Senate and House of Rep? resentatives has agreed and reported to each bouse upon the currency bill, the passsgs of that measure may be said to be measurably in sight. It will no doubt be a law within a week or two, or possibly a few days. The Times has more than once said it looks for no great change in present financial conditions as the result of that bill. The permission it gives to National banks to issue notes to the par value of their United States bends, instead of ninety per cent, of the face value only, will not produce any important results. It does not pay the National banks to have their money in United States bonds, even with the email addition to what thev may issue upon them, to say nothing of the fluctuations in their value whi**h make the banks more or less speculators, ?nd if a measure com? mended to bauks does not...

Ae with slaking building lime, so in the case of slaking carbide (.Acetylene lim?), some heat is developed. With sn abundance of water and a little car- ! bide (at point of contact), there is cool generation; but with the condi? tions reversed, as by dropping or otherwise applying s little water over s quantity of carbide, the heat, in the confined ?juaters is sure to be considersble. CLARKE COURIER JOHN O CROWN, Rdltor and Proprletoi v> i- LINSSDAY, MAR. 21,K?00. After consultation with Kepubli can leaders in Congress. Mr. Kay, of New York, chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, has intro? duced a resolution proposing to the states the followiog constitutions! amehdment on the subject of trusts: ?'The Congress shall create and dis? solve corporations snd dispo.se of their property: to make all laws necessary and proper for the execution of the foregoing powers. Such powers may also be exercised by the several States in any manner not in conflict with the laws of the United Sutes." A subcommittee of seven has been ap? pointed to consider this ss well as other bills and resolutions submitted to tbe Judiciary Committee and to report legislation. CLARKE COURIER WEDNESDAY. MARCH 21, 1900. Dr Keeley and Keeley ism The death of Ur. Keeley, of "Kee? ley Cure" fame, removes a figure who bas beeu more or less conspicuous in this country during the last twenty years. About a ?quarter of a t-enturv ago Dr. Keeley, who was theu a rep? utable physiciau at Dwigbt, a ?mall town in Illinois, anuounced that he had discovered a <-ure for alcoholism. His successful treatment and ?'cure" of habitual tlruukeuuess in hie own neighborhood were gradually noised abroad, and in time attracted attention in the large cities of the . particularly St. Louis and Chi? cago. At first he ouly sold a remedy which he called the "Double Chloride of (?old." but later, after the estab? lishment of a sanitarium, he adopted ? "prescribed treatnieut" which par ticularv included the periodic injec? tion of the magic liquid into the arms of patients. I >r. CLARKE COCRIER JOHN O CROWN, editor and Proprietoi. \% r i >N RSDAY. M AH. M, l.'OO. The Topeka Capital, (Kan ., which was published for one week as a Christian daily, according to the ideas of Ker. O. M. Sheldon, was such a success that its principal owners have decided to continue it on the same plan. A Sunday edi tion was issued, but it was filled en? tirely with religious matter and was finished before 12 o'clock Ssturdsy night, though the previous Monday morning editiou wag prepared for on Sunday. Financially, however, the paper brought great returns, but whether this was on account of cu? riosity and will drop off in a short time, or coutiuue as permanent pa? tronage remains to be seen. There are many daily and weekly papers conducted on lines of strict morality and their aim is to benefit mankind and the community, but the com? bining of a religious and secular journal in one is original with Mr. Sheldon.
