A VISION FO THE WAR The past vises before me like a sream. Again we are in the great dtruggle for national life. We hear the sounds of preparation the music of boisterous drums the silver notes of heroic bugles. We see thousands of assemblages and hear the appeal of orators; we see the pale cheeks of women, \and the Hushed faces of men; and in those assemmblages we see all the dead whose dust we have covered with flowers. We lose sight of them no more. We are with them when they - enlist in the great army of freedom. We see them part with those they love. Some are walk ing for the last time in quiet, woody places, with the maidens they adore. We hear the whisperings and the sweet vows of eternal love as they lingeringly part forever. Others are bending over cradles, /kissing babies that are asleep. Some are receiving the blessings of old men. Some are parting with mothers who hold them and press them to their hearts again and again, and say nothing. Kisses and tears, tears and kisse...

»Between Two fires® By ANTHONY HOPE "A wIM man will make more opportunities than he finds." —Francis Bacon. CHAPTER XIX. In spite of many anxieties, after this eventful day I enjoyed the first decent night's rest I had had for a week. The Colonel refused, with an unnecessary os tentation of scorn, my patriotic offer to keep watch and ward over the city, and I turned In, tired out at eleven o'clock, after a light dinner. I felt I had some reasons for self-congratulations; for con siderable as my present difficulties were, yet I undoubtedly stood in a more hopeful poaition than I had before the revolution. I waa now resolved to get my money safe out of the country, and I had hopes of being too much for McGregor in the other matter which shared my thoughts. The return of the day, however, brought new troubles. I was roused at an early hour by a visit from the Colonel himself. He brought very disquieting tidings. In the course of the night every one of our proclamations had been torn do...

In connection with this thought came another. He had recently read Owen Meredith's "Luelle," and as he jour neyed he recalled the case there de scribed of the French nobleman who for a time his life and neglect ed his splendid opportunities in brood ing over the downfall of the Bourbon dynasty and in an obstinate refusal to reconcile himself to the new order of things. RUMORS OF WAR SOME PEOPLE BOUND TO THINK SO. SENDING ATLANTIC FLEET TO PACIFIC WATERS TO SHOW SPEED. Oyster Bay, N. Y„ July 7.—The sig nificance of Rear Admiral Brownson's addition to the somewhat meager in formation which has come from Presi dent Roosevelt regarding the contem plated two ocean maneuvers of the Atlantic battleships, is regarded here as having been overlooked in the com ment, expert and otherwise, which has since been indulged In on both con tinents. Admiral Brownson came- to Oyster Bay Friday to take lunch with the president, professing entire ignor ance of the maneuver plans. When ho left Sagamore Hill to take' the train for Washington, the admiral had one thought which he wished emphasized —that'it was desirable and important to demonstrate to the world how quickly the American navy could transfer its fighting strength from one ocean to the other. We had no time to waste in abusing Che Colonel; the question was how to outwit him. I unfolded my plan to the fiignorina, not at all disguising from her the difficulties, and even dangers, attend ant upon it. Whatever may have been her mind before and after, she was at fehie moment either so overcome with her (ear of the Colonel, or so carried away by her feeling for me, that she made noth ing of difficulties and laughed at dangers, pointing out that though failure would m ignominious, it could not substantially aggravate our present position.
