Ten years tigo I was elected ShcrifTof lliis'county. This was my first election, nnd I liavo been returned regularly ever since. My first at tcmit to oicn court was made during an im portant trial. Tlic criminal was a depraved, desperate wretch, who had been indicted Tor an itrocioua and brutal murder. The follow was greatly hardened and seemed to care but little liow the trial went the evidence was strong against him, and when the case was submitted to the jury, they returned a verdict of guilty without leaving their ucnte. The execution was fixed for a day, two weeks after the trial. Of coureo it was my duty to put the rope around his neck, and launch him into eternity.
