TOWN AND COUNTY. Taxes For 1898.—Under the v pres ent law, 1898 taxes will become delin quent. June 1,1899. Half payment of the real estate taxes may be made on or before May 31, 1899, when the re maining half will not become delin quent nor be subject to interest until after November 30, 1899. Interest at the rate of 15 per cent per annum will be charged from date of delinquency on all taxe-. Personal property taxes do not come under the sam: rule as realty. No half payment can be made as ill the case of the latter. The law governing its collection reads as fol lows: "On and after the first Monday in February succeeding the levj of taxes the county treasurer shall pro ceed to collect all personal property taxes, and if such taxes are not paid on thirty days notice, unless secured by real estate, he shall distrain suffi cient goods and chattels belonging to the peison charged with such taxes to pay the same, etc."—Section 71, laws of '97. Smalt, Pox.—lnformation comes to the News that small pox is getting hear to us, and that a few days ago a porter on the Great Northern Railway Wag stricken with it and is now in a Spokane hospital. Jacob Thiel and family, who went on a visit to Ger many some time ago, are quarantined somewhere on the route. We will venture to say that few children in Adams county under the age of 15 years have been vaccinated. Small pox or variola is one of the most for midable fabrile diseases. The cause of small pox is universally allowed to be a specific contagion of whose.na . ture we are in the most profound ig norance. There is probably 110 dis ease so contagions as this. It is said there has never been a single instance Where a parson liable to small pox could associate in the same room with a patient without receiving the infection. Ward of the Grand Lodge of the state, ac companied by Mr. A. E.
