Two Mexicans who wore confined in wrison, upon tho charge of mur dering a man named M. MeCart- ney, awaiting the action of the Grand Jury, made their escape on Sunday evening last, which they effected by digging through the wall with a broken "file. For tunately, however, they were heavily ironed, but for which cir cumstance they might have been successful. It- appears they went but a short distance to where some Indians were living, and endea vored to have their irons taken off, whereupon one of the Indians came to town with all possible haste and informed the officers of the prisoners' whereabouts. In a few hours they were re-captured and .safely lodged in prison, where they will be likely' to rernain un til they have been legally dealt with. Small and family ar rived in town the present week per steamer Newbern. The Gen eral is Chief Commissary of the Department of Arizona, and his arrival at this time was hailed with delight by both officers and men at the post. In this depart ment Gen. Small has no acknowl edged superior on this coast, the best evidence of which is, the Federal Government retain him in that position. He was former ly the Purchasing Commissary in San Francisco, and has exercis ed great jare and ability in his selections, with an eye single to hig duty, by which course he has made a great saving to the Gov ernment, and at the same time added greatly to the health and comfort of all employed within his Department.
