*nTalbs1bhill @idd. How Gossip INCREASEs.-How gos sip increases and grows till it gets into genuine scandal, and is entirely differ ent from the original story, is toldiby a letter-writer. He says that he was told, that if lie ever took a house in a terrace a little way out of town to be very careful that it was the center one. For one must be well aware that a story never loses by telling, and, con sequently, if lie lived in the middle of I a row of houses it was very clear that the tales which might be circulated to his prejudice wotlfd only have half the distance to travel on either side of him, and therefore, could only be half as bad by the time they got down to the bottom of the terrace as the tales that might be circulated of the wretched individual who had the mis fortune to live at either end of it. oinal sonbill¢e (id. During the existence of the Maine liquor law, a showman appeared in a certain town with a small, dirty, tat tered canvass tent, a half-starved wolf, and a suspicious looking keg. The admission fee, ten cents, was readily paid by numbers of persons, who'man ifeated a peculiarly strong desire to see this ver) common and villainous looking specimen of the animal king dom. B4 the oddest part of the show to the by-standers was that one visi tor went in to take another look at the wolf no less than seven times during the afternoon. After some un succeseful attempts to start for home, le approached the tent door with an unsteady step, and handing his last dime to the slhowman, said, "I b-be lieve I' take j-j-just one more look at the wolf!" The last man to revive the exces sively silly but virulent slander con cerning Mr. Greeley about an alleged lilbl upon Southern women, is Senator Ames of Mississippi and Massachu setts. Every publisher of a newspaper has heard this tremendous order from of fended subscribers, imagined by the offendedto be as dangerous asa stroke of lightning, but in reality more harmless than a mosquito bite. A good story is told by the Philadelphia Post of Mr. Swaim the former proprie tor of the Daily Ledger., By his course on some public question, on which different persons had different opin ions, Mr. Swaim had offended a num ber of readers, one of whom met him on Chestnut street, and thus accosted him: "Mr. Swaim, I've stopped the Le4 ger." " What is thati sir?" " I've stopped the Ledger," was the stern reply. "Is it possible!" said Mr. Swaim. " My dear sir, what do you mean ? Come with me to the office."
