The emigra tion movement commenced in" 1815, on the close of the great European convulsions, and eince that date it is calculated that 4, '923,574 persons have migrated from the British isles: Of these, 1,186,735 went to the North American colonies ; 2,960, 7C6 to the United States ; 68(5,899 to the Austra lion group of colonies, and 88,234 in other localities.. The annual average from .1815 to 1849 was 109,347 ; and for the last ten years 248,958, illustrating the well known fact that of late, emigration - has proceeded in a greatly accelerated ratio. It cannot fail to strike every one who glances at these - figures-that we have succeeded somewhat in diverting, by the excessive prices demand ed for colonial land, the great bulk of our emigration, to the United , States, although this was formerly not the case. Thus, from 1815 to 1834, the emigration stream flowed more freely into British America than into the United...
