Puerto Notes. (Correspondence : The farmers in the vicinity of Puerto are plowing and preparing ground for planting crops. Some have planted and have corn up. The cold snaps have done very little damage to growing crops in this part of the country. Meeks and Griggs made a busi ness trip to Tucumcari Monday. Mr. Meeks is talking of going back to Oklakoma as he has interests there that require his attention. J. P. Atkins and brother-in-law Mr. Chandler, were in Quay last week looking at the country. They visited Tucumcari on their trip. Mr. Chandler is lately from Okla homa and is well pleased with our country. Puerto is to have a picnic the 23rd and everybody invited. We will have good speakers and plenty to eat. The people of this community have a move on foot to chip in and work a good road up Puerto canon. It is on a section line. Public School Closed Yesterday. Avery successful nint1 months term of our public schools closed yesterday afternoon with short and very appropriate exercises. The enrollment reached during the term 380 pupils which were graded as well as could be titular the circum stances. The school has been too crowded for the teachers to accom plish what might be expected of them under more favorable circum stances, but people knowing this greatly appreciate Prof. Ware's efforts. The eight grades have been handled by four teachers at an expense of $3, 000.00. Some im provements in the way of desks have been added and the value oj the building and its equipment is about $ 1 0,000. 00. Bonds have been voted for additional building space for next year and a ten mill levy for school purposes. The improve ments contemplated will be about $4,000.00 and six teachers will be employed next year which will cost about $5,000.00. A ninth grade will be added and it is expected that the enrollment will reach ...
