Correspondence of the N. T. Evening Post. The case of flannel Mason Conviction - of a J3an for Harboring his own Child. WAsnixGTOX, May Z4. have al luded once or twice to the hard case of Manuel Masou, a colored man, in Wash ington. The case has jnst been opened afresh to me by responsible parties and I have gathered the following facts, which are so-startling that I verture to send them to you at the risk of tiring your readers with the case. Let me promise by saying that the facts can be proven in any decent court. Said Manuel Masen and his wife were slaves of a white woman, living a few miles out of the city. A few years ago Mannel was taken jick with mflamito ry rheumatism, and was given up by the doctors as incurable. Under these circumstances his mistress - offered t' tell him for $300, Nobody- would touch him at that price. Finally she offered to give the cripple his freedom for $300, he to pay her in instalments, lie accepted the offer an J paid off the entire um in due eour...

i.at Are Consols I This question may bo worth answer ing at present when every one is Rook ing with interest to' the; commercial' status of Great Britain. A rise or fall in " Consols n is invariably taken as a sign of commercial prosperity or ad versity, yet few have a very definite idea of what is meant by Consols." We find in the Boston Herald the fol lowing explanation r - It is not expected that everybody should know what Consols are, or if they do that they should constantly bear in nibwt what an 'Important ele ment they are in the affairs of-Great Britain. We propose to make a simple explanation as to their importance, by remarking that a permanent fall of 1 per cent, involves a loss of holders of, in round numbers, thirty million of dol lars. " . . -; The national debt of England beoran with the relinquishment of the old. cus tom of extorting from the people and substituting borrowing therefor to meet public exigencies.'
