Untitled [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: “ ‘ ' May the peace of the Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God the Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit be always with you! As I write this, a few days after delivering a paper on prayer at a Jewish-Christian ecumenical gathering in Houston, I am full with humble gratitude for having been called to be a Christian. In all our discussions between Jews and Christians, most of them rabbis or Christian pastors,! saw how Christ should fulfill all the expectations of the Jewish people,God’s chosen people, yet most Jews around the world still await the coming of the Messiah. We Christians have received so much in and through Jesus Christ. But does such richness and insight into God's very own trinitarian family transform our lives radically? I have chosen for this month's teaching the vital topic of obedience ,love and freedom. It seems to me the reason why we do not actuate in our lives and around us in our world the treasures of our Christian faith ...

OBEDIENCE,LOVE AND FREEDOM [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

OBEDIENCE,LOVE AND FREEDOM In last month’s teaching,we have seen how great is God’s love for us. St. Paul links the manifestation of God’s passionate, outpoured ,self-emptying love for each of us with the obedience of Jesus, through His self-emptying,kenotic love, when He became obedient unto death,’’even to accepting death, death on a cross” (Ph 2: 6-8). .Now we know what God is like. He is like the Suffering-Ser-vant Jesus. God truly loves us and seeks to live, not for His own purpose but for our happiness. He has died for love of us! In this teaching let us look at our response to such a divine, ’’passionate” love which God pours into our hearts, especially in those precious moments when we are alone with the Alone. Let us examine in detail the essence of Christian obedience to God’s loving call and make .connections between obedience and freedom and love.

TRUE LOVE OBEYS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

TRUE LOVE OBEYS True love is always self-emptying in loving service toward the one we love. Obedience to Christ is the index of our love for Him and of our loving 'union with Him. While reading the early Fathers of the desert,! have often been impressed by the fact that the one work they assigned to all Christians, regardless of their state of life,is to observe in loving obedience the commands of Christ. But this is only because such athletes for Christ understood the true nature of love as self-surrender in obedience to Christ. We hear from Christ Himself that, if v/e truly love Him, we will keep His word ’’and my Father will love him,and we shall come to him and make our home with him” (Jn Keeping Christ's word, for Christians, should be more than the observance of the ten commandments. It goes even beyond observing all that Jesus commanded in the New Testament teachings. It comes down to a state of listening to the indwelling Christ, as He,through His Spirit, reveals to you the min...

THE JOY OF OBEYING GOD’S WILL [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

THE JOY OF OBEYING GOD’S WILL For you there should be no greater joy than to seek out and willingly do the will of the Heavenly Father in each event. The secret of a truly happy and successful human life is gauged by your seeking,as Jesus always did in His earthly life,to please the Heavenly Father in all things,in every thought, word and deed. It is a basic human understanding that if you love someone, you will ’’die" to your own wishes and live to please the other. You will wait on the wishes of that person and consider it a joy and a privilege to "do" anything that would bring pleasure and happiness to that person. Thus true love of God is not proved solely by words,no matter how much you may say, n Lord,Lordbut solely by deeds,by observing the will of God. If you keep my commandments you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in his love (Jn 15:10). This is never a humiliating submission before a powerful, austere God,but a filial surrender ...

CHRISTIAN OBEDIENCE TO GOD [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

CHRISTIAN OBEDIENCE TO GOD Let us examine more in detail the meaning of our Christian obedience to God. Often from childhood experiences we have derived a sense of obedience connected with a limitation to our own human freedom. Obedience may seem to Us as a restraint upon our wishes. Remember how your father or mother gave some chores to do. This was a command to do something which usually you interpreted as meaning something distasteful to you,but also it put a roadblock before your own plans. True obedience in the Christian sense must not be seen as a sign of lessening our human freedom, but, rather,as a true sign of freedom. We experience immediately and intimately God's free gift of Himself to us through Jesus and His Spirit. God has a constant affection (Jr 31:3) for us and a dynamic, loving action to bring about our complete happiness. Another element essential to Christian obedience is that, as God calls us out of His love,we are called to a responsible return of such a free lov...

THE CONCEPT OF OBEDIENCE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

THE CONCEPT OF OBEDIENCE The word, obedience, comes from the Latin verb,ob-audire.which means to listen to a call. It implies a readiness and freedom to respond favorably to a call given in love. Thus we are encouraged by St. Paul always to discern what is from God’s true Spirit."And do not be thoughtless but recognise what is the will of the Lord...be filled with the Spirit" (Eph 5:18). It calls forth from us a free decision in response to God’s infinite love and goodness. Believing in God’s perfect holiness and goodness,we can and should give an unconditional love because we are certain through faith in His rectitude. "I know in whom I trusted" (2 Tm 1:12). We see how Jesus pushed Himself to obey His Father's commands with no little sacrifice in His agony in the Garden of Gethsemani (Lk 22:^2-Ah)* Jesus’ love for His Father prompted Him to want to give more. He was sensitive to His Father’s loving presence and He desired to be a loving presence to His Father by wishing to make all f...

HUMAN FREEDOM [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

HUMAN FREEDOM God respects our free will. In this we bear God’s image and likeness. He has endowed us with such liberty in order that we can freely determine ourselves by free choices to give *ourselves as gifts in return to God for His self-emptying gift to us. He does not want a robot, pre-programmed to a given response. He wishes from us a response that is loving and free, spontaneous and full of praise, joy and thanksgiving. God says to us:’’You are My son/daughter. I only want your heart, your response in action that will flow out of your spontaneous improvising a way to return My love for you* Choose out of love and I am thrilled as any earthly mother and father would be happy with their children returning love with love.” There can be no coercion on God’s part toward us since with Him there is only love. "In love there can be no fear but fear is driven out by perfect love” (1 Jn 4:18)# We are not infants responding to God’s demands, but His sons and daugthers acting out of free...

PRINCIPLE OF INNER DIGNITY [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

PRINCIPLE OF INNER DIGNITY The freeing power of the Holy Spirit consists primarily in an ongoing process of leading us out of slavery from sin and death and the Law into true liberty as God’s sons and daughters. As He reveals to us daily the resurrectional power of Jesus’ presence living within us,allowing us to live each moment in Him and with Him,we learn to accept our true identity. Living in the present now,we can live in the unchangeable eternal now of God’s love for us in Christ Jesus. The Holy Spirit progressively effects our regeneration into children of God as we yield to His power in us. The Spirit has liberated us from the slavery of selfishness or sin (Rm 6:17)- We have truly been reborn from "above, V not merely by water but by the Holy Spirit (Jn 3:5)- Yet the Good News is that our rebirth is always taking place at this moment that the Spirit pushes us to live according to our inner dignity of being in Christ, a part of His Body,His brothers and sisters, and all of us t...

JESUS,THE HEALER AND LIBERATOR [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

JESUS,THE HEALER AND LIBERATOR Jesus came to free us,the whole "man”,body, soul and spirit,in all our relationships. He came to give us life that we might have it more abundantly (Jn 10:10). His love, which is an exact image of the love of the Father for His children, was poured over each person whom He met during His earthly life. He looked into their eyes and poured out an infinite love of healing that,to those who believed and accepted that love, brought them into anew existence. Jesus came to image the Father’s love, not only in each personal encounter with each individual sick person, but, above all,in His "hour” as He hung dying on the cross. In His final hour of kenosis Jesus speaks God’s Word of total love for us. Emptied not only of all human dignity but of the very last drops of water and blood,Jesus by that act has entered into an eternal act of always now loving us with such passionate madness. We can at every moment experience a freeing from sin and loneliness, fear and anxiety...

FREE TO LOVE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

FREE TO LOVE Jesus' obedience to respond to the love of the Father that He experienced throughout His earthly life in each human encounter shows us the intimate relation of obedience to love and to freedom. Love is a free choice,as Jesus shows us,to give oneself to God and to others in a free deliberation. In the cross and death of Christ freedom is revealed as a gift. The Christian under the Spirit of Jesus understands that slavery to egoism is destroyed by Jesus' great personal love for each of us individually. And true freedom a is now revealed as God's love in us bringing us into a slvery now to belong totally to Jesus Christ. How beautifully St. Paul experienced in his conversion that true freedom which was total surrender to Jesus Lord. As Jesus is the "Yes-servant" to His Father,so Paul and other Christians are to pass-over from the slavery to selfishness, sin, death, the lav/ and the elements of this world that keep the entire cosmos held in bondage into a loving service to Jes...

ABANDONMENT [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

ABANDONMENT Christ is to become more and more the center of all our thoughts and actions* Everything in us,the values that we choose to live and act by,must be brought under obedience to Christ Jesus (2 Cos 10:5)• We are to walk in anew life with Christ (Rm 6:T)* As you learn to let go of your own control over yourself, over God and your neighbor, you find yourself progressively abandoning yourself to let God have complete freedom to do wi.yj whatever He wishes. Your prayer becomes that of the and abandoned Jesus in the Garden: "Not my will by thine be done." This is a movement of grace that admits of many degrees and manifestations. It is not a static relationship to God nor is it a passive , infantile surrendering of all activities and desires on your part, without exercising your responsibility to make free choices out of a loving self-gift. It is the unfolding of the infusion of the Holy Spirit's gifts of faith, hope and love. As you come to believe in God's infinite love for you,y...

SURRENDER IN LOVE IS PERFECT OBEDIENCE [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 March 1986

SURRENDER IN LOVE IS PERFECT OBEDIENCE If the love of God within you begets love as your response to God,then abandonment is perfect obedience in the great movement of love toward the Heavenly Father. Such a love contains all other virtues and is the fulfillment of the two great commands of God: we are to love God with our whole heart and love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Such love is a renunciation of all self-centeredness in order, out of love for God,to do what is perceived by the mind, enlightened by grace,to be the will of God.lt is a total gift of yourself as you,ln your human situations, seek to live according to the mind of God. Love is the key word in abandonment. But it is also the key to true human and divine freedom. In such a convergence of obedience to God out of love freely given as a response to God’s perfect self-emptying love to you,we see how true obedience to God,true love for God and neighbor and true freedom are mutually inter-related. God becomes truly you...

MODERN TYPES OF PRAYER [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 April 1986

MODERN TYPES OF PRAYER Many Christian Shave reached an impasse in their prayer life. There are many reasons for this crisis in prayer. Negatively ac J ivi m seems to increase by the day among us Westerners who live mainly in an animus culture that measures success by "doing." Such doing activism has for a long time dominated the spiritual life of most Christians. Materialism, that is at the root of the Western way of life, fosters a pragmatism that measures real success by material values and develops a sense of self-sufficiency that contradicts the spirit of the Bible. Traditional prayer and ritual forms no longer seem adequate to speak to the needs of modern men and women who are in an almost perpetual state of transiency and mobility. The Cartesian dichotomy between mind and matter has all too clearly separated the secular from the sacred, making prayer in the modern market place very difficult . But more positively such a crisis in prayer has been helped by the growth in personali...

EXPANDED CONSCIOUSNESS [Newspaper Article] — Inscape — 1 April 1986

EXPANDED CONSCIOUSNESS Psychologists like Abraham Maslow have coined the word "peak exnerience" to describe the "ecstasy" or standing outside of our habitual level of consciousness in anew experience. Modern man and woman,as they pray, are seeking new ways of entering into an ex- mansion of their consciousness of identity before their Maker and T'Ord. Thus what we see today throughout the Western Christian world are many Christians eagerly seeking disciplines and techniques that will alow them admittance into an inner world of contact with the Transcendent or to meet that same hidden God within the group of deeply personalistic, loving persons. Either fed up with the gross materialism of their society or the loss of faith-community in their church affiliation, where they perhaps once had experienced God,they are turning to various forms of Far E a stern meditation,to prayer forms from the Eastern Christian world or merely "christianising 1 ' forms that come out of the popular quest for...
