®Jw jgattg appeal. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 25 January 1860

®Jw jgattg appeal. \ DISTINGUISHED REGIMENT. —Among the Austrian prisoners at Paris, at this moment, is one that belongs to a regiment which claims a singular privilege, that of | encamping for three days. whenever they j pass through Vienna, in the court o". the ' Emperor, and of receiving the must regal entertainment. The Colonel, upon his arrival, is allowed by law to pass to the Emperor's chamber without question, none being permitted to stop him. lie knocks thrice, and demands orders of his Majesty, when the Emperor invites him and his to remain three days, regaling at his expense in the palace, assigns the Colonel a room next his door, and a guard and lords in waiting attend him the same as the sovereign. The American Stables In England. [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 25 January 1860

The American Stables In England. Winter has at last closed down upon racing in the mother country, and until Spring smiles upon the knoll of Aintree, our Yankee flyers will not again quit their sheds except for an occasional walk. The stable of Mr. Ilarlan may be looked upon as completely "out of tlie ring." Lincoln having gone amiss in his hock. Des Whiles coveix-J with blotches, and Cincinnati so umnanagable as to unfit her for the turf. Would it be in judgment :o br-od av.\ with such a furious difpositi n ' r". would doubtless raise a whole nation of nags like Miss Obstinate, the grand-dam of Wild Irishman and Frankfort. The bonnie bay marc, Prioress, will not probably make her appearance upon the turf again. At the age of six years she has had to run hard and take desperate chances. She is not a bad race-horse, and, if bred to Fisherman this year, she may become as fine a brood-mare as is her dam who has never dropped but one colt that was no racer, while she has given Ann Dunn,...

ihc § ailg Appeal. WHAT THK BBLI,S SAY. —"As the Tool . thinks, the bell tinks." Wc iire all prone to interpret facts and tokens in accordance with our own inclinations and habits of thought. It was not the voice of the bells which first inspired young Whittington with hopes of attaining civic honors; it was because he had conceived such hopes already that lie was able to hear so distinctly the words. "Turn agrtin Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London, "People make the bells say whatever they have a mind." (French). In a Latin sermon mi widowhood by Jean Raulin, a monk of ('liiny, of the fifteenth century, there is a lory which Rabelais lias told nguin in his own way. Uaulin's version is this—■•A widow consulted her parish priest ii.boat entering into a second marriage.— She told him she stood in need of u helpmate and protector, and that her journeyman, for whom she had taken a fancy, was 'industrious and well acquainted with her late husband's trade. She fliiiig [Newspaper Article] — Marysville Daily Appeal — 26 January 1860

She fliiiig AN ANCIENT CTSTOM. —Among themfuiy strange customs of the past still preserved in England. U one which requires the Sheriff of London, or one of the undersheriffs, 011 any day between the feast of St. Michael the Archangel, and the morrow of St. Martin, to go through, before the (Queen's Remembrancer, the ceremony of cutting faggots with a bill-hook and adz, as suit and service for a piece of land called the Moor, in Shropshire ; and the counting of six horse shoes and sixty-one nails, as suit and service for a piece of land called the Forge, in the parish of St. Clement Danes. The service was performed this year on the 31st of October, at the office pf the Queen's Remembrancer, upon which the latter declared the service \yell performed, which terminated the proceedings. Formerly the ancient ceremony, beiiig performed in Court of Exchequer at Westminster, created great curiosity, the Court being always crow ded ; but by a new act it has become a scmi-priyate official cer...
