Important changes to the city charter could wind up on the 2008 ballot for voter consideration. The city’s 15member Charter Review Committee has been conducting multiple forums in various communities for weeks, fostering a citywide conversation about what changes should be included to the city’s governing document. One such forum was held July 31 at the Hervey/ Point Loma Branch Library, where the public was given a chance to weigh in on important issues such as financial reform, the powers of elected officials and the possibility of making the strong mayor form of government a permanent idea. Pacific Beach Concerts on the Green Thornton’s trial is set for Oct. 10, and he has pleaded not guilty. He remains in county jail in lieu of $ 250,000 bail. At the preliminary hearing on May 17, Judge Julia Kelety struck down the premeditation allegation, but the prosecutor refiled it afterward. Epley quoted what Kelety said when dropping the allegation:“ This just doesn’t strike me as a situation in which there was a decision made to kill in advance, even shortly in advance,” said Kelety at the time. “I think this is a situation where people are drinking and there’s not a lot of reasoned thought going on by really anyone. I think this was a rash and impulsive act,” Kelety added at the preliminary hearing. itation.” He argued that Thornton “knew what he was doing...( as) the use of force here grossly exceeded that of an ordinary bar fight.” Thornton’s lawyer, Mel Epley, said Riek“ provoked” the bar fight. He said there was no deliberate plan to kill Riek, calling it only a drunken b...

The Monterey Bay Aquarium, located near a natural sea otter habitat, typically rescues and rehabilitates stranded California sea otters through their surro-gate-mother otter program, according to Carswell. However SeaWorld is caring for this pup at their Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Complex while the Monterey Bay facilities are under construction. Carswell said that the U. S. The foundation asked for about $ 3,000 in county funds to support the Peninsula Singers, a nonprofit community chorus who sing at libraries, the USS Midway and other venues in the area, said Mike Akey, the Ocean Beach Community Foundation’s vice president. He said the other $ 2,000, in collaboration with OBMA, would help revitalize and repair the Ocean Beach Veterans Memorial Plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue. leadership. true example of community Enough cannot be said of his vigilance and attention to detail in steering this project from its inception to a reality. Mr. Rahe has been working nonstop since last October to ensure that the residents and visitors of Mission Beach have a safer community in which to live. Let’s all stand up and give a hand and recognition to someone who shows a project. Without his countless letters, meetings with Councilman Faulconer, his staff and Lt. Ahearn, additional meetings and letters to the city engineers and months spent gathering statistical information about the crime on El Carmel Point, this project would not have even come to the table. This unsung hero is Buz Rahe of Mission Beach. Many have expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the Mission Beach Women’s Club for stepping up to the plate and donating the funds in order to add two additional lights to the El Carmel Lighting Project. Yet, many do not realize there is a quiet, unassuming com...

As we started to pull up the anchor, we realized it was snagged on the bottom, and it took all three of us to haul it up. As we struggled to get the anchor out of the water, we saw that it was hooked to a kelp-covered kelp basket. But as we got it closer to the boat, we noticed the tire and a mass of spokes. “Hey, it’s a bike.” Someone had dumped a mountain bike into the bay, and now it was stuck to our anchor. Incidentally, it was near the same spot where my father snagged an old car tire with the anchor three weeks before. We didn’t want to leave someone’s junk in the bay, so we tied it off to the boat and hauled it out of the BY LARRY HARMON | BEACH& BAY PRESS boaters and fishermen wanted to check out. Excelling at guitar and deciding that a career in music was what he wanted to pursue, James moved to California to be formally trained at the Los Angeles Musicians Institute. During his recovery back in Vancouver, his grandmother, a former music teacher, gave him money for a guitar. The attack severed his foot, resulting in severe blood loss, rendering him unconscious and leaving him incapacitated for about a year, he said. Right after graduating high school, James moved to the Caribbean, catching waves, and, as he said,“ loving life.” At 18 years old, while surfing in Venezuela, James was attacked by a tiger shark.
